Senior Leaders Reflective Report

Decent Essays
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the impacts the Senior Leaders Course (SLC) had on my leadership philosophy. I will identify what coursework, instructions, and peer interactions have changed my priorities as a leader. Identify what situations I would tackle differently or plan to address when I go to my next assignment. When you take into consideration the course length and what you gain while attending SLC, I am not impressed with the overall curriculum.
Upon reading the coursework and what the SLC students would be covering, I thought SLC was going to be very educational. Unfortunately, I was let down by how the curriculum was presented to the class. The curriculum is established for the students to teach by sharing knowledge from the field; however, many of the students in my class did not have real experiences. Instead of sharing their own personal knowledge,

Research ability is what I was evaluated on during the Warrior Leaders Course (WLC) and therefore I was hoping for something a bit more challenging. I already know how/where to find DA-PAMs, FM, and ARs. One way to mitigate this issue would be to split the First Sergeant ISN posts between the students. One student is assigned to create a post and other students reply or comment to the students post.
I don’t see how the current curriculum for SLC will change how I tackle future problems. The IPB, Information Collection, and the Intelligence Support to Targeting evaluations were not challenging for even a 10 level soldier. Senior NCOs should already be experts at these tasks and should not have to come to the NCOA to be evaluated at them, as we are already evaluated on them in our NCOERs. I do plan to address my personal career map and have chosen several schools to make me a better GEOINT NCO. The skills that I will gain attending these courses will provide me with additional skill sets my peers do not

Professions “produce uniquely expert work, not routine or repetitive work”. The profession demands that we become subject-matter experts in the MOS that we hold and to progress as we as Soldiers learn something new every day. The effectiveness of our military is lacking cultural awareness. These cultural awareness programs that were installed in the Vietnam-War have gone away only to come back when they should have never left in the first place. The development of leaders is a never-ending process by which we adapt to the generational changes that if practiced constantly and effectively will build a foundation for success for years to come.…

This course was extremely intriguing and had me hooked from the first discussion forum. It required me to venture out of my comfort zone and ask questions that others viewed as odd, but I knew was going to assist me in my studies. I can recall one specific instance where I was on twenty-four-hour duty and I began asking a police officer doing his security checks questions. It had to be two in the morning and you can tell by the exhausted look on his face when he walked through the bitter cold into our dimly lit building entrance. He spoke with very little energy as he said good morning, but once I began asking him the list of questions that I just so happened to have typed on my laptop screen he immediately perked up and began to speak with life.…

The Senior Leader Course (SLC) reinforced in me the true meaning General Al Gray’s Grayism, “Don’t be afraid to learn from others” (Otte, 2015). The greatest learning opportunity in SLC came from my fellow classmates and their fearlessness in sharing their personal and professional experiences. If I could transport this class back in time one year and know what I know now, I would have been better able to assist one of my Soldiers whose service was reviewed under the Army’s Qualitative Management Program (QMP). Many of my classmates impressed me with their experience, both their technical skills while deployed and their compassion for Soldiers while fulfilling their duties as senior non-commissioned officers (NCO). I learned the most from…

The Special Operations Combat Medic Course (SOCM) is a nine month long course consisting of six training blocks and a one-month long hospital rotation. The design of the course progresses the students from the fundamentals of medicine to advanced combat casualty management over its duration. The SOCM leadership is responsible for ensuring continuity of instruction, but there is a lack of interaction among the leadership of the individual blocks and their instructors. More intimate integration and knowledge sharing between the blocks would create a holistic training environment that would seamlessly blend training into a contiguous process capable of producing an even higher quality of combat medic.…

Direct Leadership versus Organizational Leadership Leadership is a relevant role in any institutions, mainly for the armed forces. The biggest challenge for leaders is to switch from the junior level to the senior level, improving and adapting their competences to face the demands of the new position. Knowing their strengths and weakness, leaders in any level have to be an example for subordinates, having the ability to influence and motivates them, leading and guiding them toward the mission accomplishment. The United States Army has been known for developing leaders for generations. After a decade of war and conflict in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan, the army has altered its expectations of “what right looks like in a “leader” and rightly so. With downsizing and the constant turnover of soldiers the U.S. Army must seize the opportunity to improve consistency and effectiveness of leader development. The Center for Army Leadership’s annual assessment of attitudes and perceptions on leader development (CASAL) identified “Develops Others” as the lowest-rated leader competency for the fifth year in a row. Just over half of Army leaders (59 percent) were regarded as effective at developing others by their subordinates.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

The Master of Strategic Leadership (MSL) program has broadened my views of leadership by providing a better perspective on the multifaceted aspects of leading. Developing the right perspective is crucial to becoming an effective leader. Perspective is our take on how we see things, whether that is good or bad depends on how it is perceived. I have learned that In order for relationships to prosper you must be willing to be patient and open your mind by viewing these challenges from different perspectives, (Smith, 2011). This program has opened my eyes to new ideas regarding leadership styles, concepts and theories that I have found to be very useful.…
