Senior Dues

Improved Essays
Over the summer, students like myself, transitioning from the seventh grade to the eighth grade, were told to earn $100 for their senior dues. On top of that, we had to write a three paragraph essay explaining our experience earning our senior dues which is exactly why I’m sitting here writing this and you, sir or ma’am, are reading this. In the assignment description, it states, “Students are old enough to earn money over the summer; they should consider babysitting, yard work for a neighbor, having a yard sale, or any other job that suits the child’s needs.” However, my two strict West Indian parents don’t exactly believe in any of that.

As a 13 year old girl, it is quite ridiculous to believe that I would be able to get any sort of job.

However, teens working at “the cash register” (par. 9) realize how important money is to succeed. Many students are saving for college or paying bills to support themselves, to help not only better their future, but…

But in fact, my experience depicts a quite harrowing and concerning aspect of presidency. In an interwoven city and school, creating close relationships was inevitable.…

“Senioritis: An ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary. "Senioritis"). All throughout America, thousands of seniors develop symptoms of this debilitating disease, especially during their second semesters. Is this epidemic a legitimate illness, or is senioritis just a rationalization made by lazy students? Although several seniors say otherwise, senioritis is a pseudo-scientific disease employed by students to slack on their studies and extracurricular activities. Despite senioritis being a fake illness, defense mechanisms, or “unconscious process[es] that protect individuals from painful ideas” are commonly used by seniors to make their impending futures seem less frightening ("Defense…

Walter Kern’s absurd idea of a total removal of senior year is not only impractical, but also detrimental to a student's education. Senior year is seen by Kern as a waste of time and money, when in fact it is the greatest possible use of time and money. 12th grade is a free year of education which is a necessity for underprivileged students. Simply shipping off 11th graders to college without any money is not good for anyone. Senior year is a stepping stone to college as it allows you to experiment with more freedom before diving headfirst into college.…
