One way senior citizens can contribute to the community after they retire is volunteering. In 2015,89.8% of senior citizens engage in formal volunteering, which consists of family, friends, and neighbors (Trends and Highlights Overview, 2015). This stimulates growth, productivity, and interdependence within communities which is vital to the success of this country. Older Americans in 2002, donated between $97.6 billion and $201 billion(Johnson, 2005). This surplus funding can go to the improvement of local schools, government programs that provide for the citizens, etc. Seeing as though senior citizens are no longer working and have little responsibilities, much of their money is sitting and not being spent. If provided to the community, much greater use can be made of it.
Politics is always an option for senior citizens. In 2016, the average retirement age in Georgia was 62 (Wallace, 2017). The average age of members of the senate in 2009 was 63 (Palmer, 2013). More older Americans are getting involved in politics, which is a good thing. They have knowledge and experience that could prove highly beneficial to politics. They know how certain can and have played out in the past which leads to more responsible, educated law making. \
