Senior citizens are important cornerstones of communities all around america. They possess knowledge and experience that prove valuable to the success of this country. For the entirety of their lives, senior citizens work and provide for our country and when the time comes for them to retire, they must put other resources to use.
One way senior citizens can contribute to the community after they retire is volunteering. In 2015,89.8% of senior citizens engage in formal volunteering, which consists of family, friends, and neighbors (Trends and Highlights Overview, 2015). Older Americans in 2002, donated between $97.6 billion and $201 billion(Johnson, 2005). This surplus funding can go to the improvement of local schools, government programs that provide for the citizens, etc. Seeing as though senior citizens are no longer working and have little responsibilities, much of their money is sitting and not being spent. If provided to the community, much greater use can be made of it.
Politics is always an option for senior citizens. In 2016, the average retirement age in Georgia was 62 (Wallace, 2017). The average age of members of the senate in 2009 was 63 (Palmer, 2013).
