The Leadership Philosophy of Senior Chief
Marine Science Technician Keith Naker To lead is to harness the motivations, hopes, and aspirations of others; to apply that energy to achieving a shared vision. When the port is calm, I expect you to maximize your family time because when we are called upon, we must go. “The day after you retire, you are no longer part of the Coast Guard. Someone has replaced you and the service goes on. Make sure you have your family there to walk away with you.” (CMC Krahn, 2012) Honesty and integrity are not negotiable. I require them from you. We have all made mistakes, we will make more. In the face of adversity we owe it to the American people to speak the truth. All, Before you re-enlist your Sailors make sure they fully understand what re-enlisting really means. Talking to some of your Sailors, I realize that they do not have a single clue what re-enlisting means for them and their family. There is nothing in the Oath of Enlistment that says anything about schools, attending to college, shore duty, buying a house, spouse collocation, dream orders, incentives, no more deployments, etc..... They have no idea that re-enlisting also means that they are worldwide deployable and that OPHOLD Program also applies to them. As a re-enlisting officer, you must take the time to interview your re-enlistee way before you actually administer the Oath of Enlistment. You must explain what is expected of them…

Upon reflecting on the word leadership, the most predominant description, which sticks out to me is the role a leader has to invite us to follow and to never give up. The keys to demonstrating and teaching others to follow is being an example to others can look up to—it is showing them how to be a leader. A leader is not one who is domineering, compulsive, demeaning towards others, or manipulative. Leadership by definition means the action of leading a group of people or an organization. It is a position you take on whether it is given to you or you step up and take it on by yourself without being asked. Leadership to me means you as an individual taking responsibility to make sure that people are doing what’s needed or that things are in order without being told. It is stepping up and saying or doing what needs to be done. For example, on the field during practice you see a section acting up or constantly talking, you respectfully yet forcefully inform them that they are not supposed to act like that during rehearsals.…
