Marine Science Technician Keith Naker To lead is to harness the motivations, hopes, and aspirations of others; to apply that energy to achieving a shared vision. CWO Harder exemplified this leadership model early in my career. He frequently adjusted to our crew, advocated for us to the command, and even in the most difficult moments, maintained his composure. Leadership must not fail to take into account the individualism that makes up the organization. Leaders should strive to be continuously tailoring their styles to each member, situation, and mission. I will strive to describe a compelling image of our future. I will ensure that every member of the crew knows why decisions were made and where they will lead us. When the port is calm, I expect you to maximize your family time because when we are called upon, we must go. “The day after you retire, you are no longer part of the Coast Guard. Someone has replaced you and the service goes on. Make sure you have your family there to walk away with you.” (CMC Krahn, 2012) Honesty and integrity are not negotiable. I require them from you. We have all made mistakes, we will make more. In the face of adversity we owe it to the American people to speak the truth. I also vow to support you through those moments, and I expect the same of you for our shipmates. Happiness makes everything else easier, but you have to work at it. If you are happy as a person we are better at our mission. If each aspect of our life was a sheet of paper stacked on a desk, happiness is a marker left too long in one spot. It bleeds through from one area of our life to another, and often leaves a wonderful, permanent mark. If hard times are weighing heavy on you, seek help. We are all accountable for our own happiness, and my marker cannot color your sheets, but together we can guide your own
