Senior Chief Dumas Leadership Style

Leadership is setting the example for others to follow, being able to follow others no matter what their rank, having professional knowledge and taking care of your people. You must be willing to set the example even when you think no one is looking; because there is always someone watching you whether you know it or not. One of my biggest leadership influences during my career was Senior Chief Brian Dumas. He was the consummate professional, he treated everyone with respect and dignity and he cared deeply for everyone at the unit. Senior Chief Dumas would take time out of his day to mentor junior members and show them the correct way to do a job if training was needed. Having Senior Chief Dumas in my life at such an early and vulnerable time in my career made a lasting impression on me. This is how I would better myself and become the leader I am today. I remember one instance in particular, as an Operations Specialist; we had to load codes for our Cryptologic equipment to receive messages. I have an excellent handle on rewarding members for things done over a course of a tour but short term project rewards fall by the wayside. This is an easy fix, recognizing members at quarters in front of the crew, stopping by their desk to offer a handshake and a thank you or by writing a positive page seven. All of these things are easy and take minimal effort; I must make a conscious effort to do the little things. By doing the easy things well and showing the members I appreciate all of their efforts; we can improve morale at the entire unit. My personal values include, but are not limited to, family, honesty, loyalty, happiness and freedom. All of these values have been engrained into me since I was a child; these values all go back to how I was raised in my home on how to treat
