Seneca Valley School District has been awarded with a great achievement. They received the WPIAL Sportsmanship Award for the first time in school history on the 12th of November. All the sports teams of Seneca Valley showed good sportsmanship during the year of 2014-2015, that’s why they were honored with the award.
“The award is a great reflection on student athletes, coaches and the community,” Athletic Director Heather Lewis said “The student’s reaction is that they take pride in what they have achieved in the district.”
Seneca Valley was chosen by the WPIAL Committee with four other schools, and they are Peters Township, West Allegheny, South Fayette and South Park high schools. The award ceremony was held at the Pittsburgh Regional Center.

Coach Boone described how the commitment of the young soldiers and the leadership of the historical Battle of Gettysburg not only influenced and inspired Abraham Lincoln but appears to be a turning point for the 1971 Titan football team from T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He told them this battle was fought for them and told them that over one hundred years later they are still faced with the same battle as those whose blood was shed for them. Boone reminded them, “You don’t have to like each other, but you will respect each other” (Remember the Titans). Boones’ leadership gave purpose and direction to the team. What’s wrong with giving children participation trophies? Authors Merryman, Priceman and Abate described their bold opinions concerning the topic of participation awards, allowing me to decide my view of these awards: allowing kids to be encouraged by participation awards is useful in young kids taking part in different activities. Parker Abate claims within his article “In Youth Sports, Participation Trophies Send a Powerful Message” that participation trophies help kids remember that teamwork with peers allows one to succeed in life and that succeeding doesn’t always mean coming in first. Abate states young athletes deserve at least some small form accomplishment because a child’s self-esteem drops when kids’ peers receive a trophy and they don’t; the participation trophy lets them know they were an important part of their team even if they did not win.…
