Seminar Mentor Reflection

Improved Essays
This first glimpse into the life of an OTEAM member has been enlightening, both on a personal level and as I move forward as a First Year Seminar mentor.

I learned about IUPUI, it's mission for its staff and students, and how OTEAM is interwoven with the university's goals. I learned how to engage my students by being there, choosing my attitude, incorporating elements of play, and by making their day (small moments build up to a big impact). I've also learned not to push students away by simply offering advice but to assist them by building up a helping relationship, where they're ultimately in charge of their own actions.

I've also gotten a taste of the incredibly diversity on campus by being able to collaborate and learn with other OTEAMers

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Do you know what city contains the longest beach in Ohio? It is Mentor, Ohio, containing Headlands Beach that is approximately one mile long. I chose this city because I have lived in the area my entire life and enjoy the many fascinating attractions the city offers to the community. Not only do I appreciate the city but my entire family also lives in Mentor, and I would like to live near them. Although Mentor is a fantastic city, I wonder if problems with the population of Mentor will affect traffic or pollution and cause families to become distant because they don’t want to travel through a populated city?…

Just last year I was driving up to LHU for the Summer Bridge program and I remember being extremely nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I remember being assigned to a “Peer Mentor” whose job was to guide me throughout my freshman year and push me to be my best. I remember going to every workshop that was held on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. because I knew if I didn’t there may be a possibility that I could miss out on some important information that would one day be helpful. I remember going to Dr. Gainer’s office every time I had a paper to write because I knew how helpful she was. I remember seeing other students in my class stress out and/or make mistakes that they would not have made if they were in SSS.…

A host of “outsiders” have been my passport to educational opportunities that are otherwise rarely discussed. I am deeply appreciative of the knowledge and understanding of what is possible they have given me. While my family has little time to explore Maine’s trails, living on less than $16K/year, I normally trek everywhere, just not in as beautiful settings. In camps people from any and everywhere join our campfire meals. Frequently populated with college aspirants and graduates who paint glowing pictures of their alma maters and how their education translated into future success are the most interesting to me.…

Today, I really enjoyed the focus on talking and more of a natural interaction with the youth. I got to sit down and talk with Kamila for the second part of today's activities and I honestly really didn't want to leave. I didn't really know what to expect out of the youth or this experience, but I get very excited every time I have an opportunity to go there. Talking with Kamila really got me excited about the mentorship program because both her and Morgan asked me.…

Assignment 1: Does peer mentoring improve college freshmen retention rate? Samantha Dean A common question posed by administrators at institutions of higher education is how to retain college freshmen. The reasons that first-year students do not return to college as a sophomore range from family issues to lack of friends and loneliness to struggling academically and lack of money. Universities cannot control all factors relating to a student’s decision to not come back as a sophomore; however, they can experiment with ways to assist students who feel lonely or struggle with academics.…

The three things that I am looking forward to in Freshman Seminar are learning more about the college experience, exploring the different majors available at Fayetteville State, and increasing my knowledge on the new things that will be taught in this class. I am looking forward to graduating from my early college, getting my acceptance letters from the colleges that I applied to, and taking classes that are related to my major. My college plans after high school are to attend Fayetteville State or go to another NC university. My career goal is to become a chemical engineer or a doctor. The most memorable moment during the holiday break was when I went to New York City to celebrate the end of year with my family.…

My capstone project was unique from everyone else, in my opinion. Most people organized an event and learned invaluable lessons about planning, budgeting, marketing, and many other lessons that can be learned from planning events. They learned lessons that one day I will hopefully learn; however, I am very thankful for not having an event based capstone. Doing research is not as flashy or exciting as having a 5k or having fundraising nights; but I believe it is equally beneficial. Although many people will never see or even hear about the research I did; it has shaped my life in ways that I did not expect.…

Freshman Seminar has had a very important impact on me so far this year, I have learned a lot of school, and life advice while taking this class. When I saw on my schedule that I would be taking this class I thought that it was going to be easy, and I would not be doing anything but sitting around and listening to lectures, I was wrong. I have learned so much from this class from calculating my GPA, to managing my bills. We have had a very challenging project called the "My Budget Project" and the main thing that this project has taught me is that you will always have to pay price whether it is dealing with currency, or decisions. Throughout this process of completing this project, I have learned a lot about myself, and how much stuff really…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…

On August 29, 2016 I walked in to the Family Life building of Utah State University knowing that I was not going to be a fan of my first class – English 1010. I knew I would not like it because I had learned to hate writing for someone other than myself in my senior year of high school. I had a teacher who loved to make essays and papers bleed with red ink. She told us it was to improve our writing; what it really did was make me hate writing. Deanna Allred did not have the goal to grammatically correct us into submission; she wanted to show us our writing could be good and our writing was allowed to start out bad.…

I’ve been thoroughly enthralled by psych since before I took a psych class. However, there were certain things we covered that just seemed to stick in my noggin like glue and made the class periods fly by! For starters, I adored when we learned about relationships. Though I try not to analyze things too much, I do really enjoy having an understanding about how people respond to things and why some people stay together and some don’t. So since I have only ever had one boyfriend and we are still together, I thought a little friendly analysis wouldn’t hurt.…

This semester I learned many techniques and lessons regarding how to become a better mentor. Some of the major lessons I learned were related to how I communicated and led others. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
