Semi-Charmed Life Meaning

Decent Essays
Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind has an upbeat melody with dark lyrical content. The instrumental aspect of the song seems very positive. However, the lyrics describe a drug user’s descent into a crystal meth addiction. My reaction to Semi-Charmed Life was positive. I enjoyed the beat and thought it was catchy. Once I looked into the meaning behind the music, I liked it even more. The lyrics reveal what a propped up life is really like. They reveal a life that is shiny on the outside. The lyrics expose beautiful people who lead bright lives but on the inside are all messed up. Night Fever To start this off I want to say I choose and did this song before I started thinking about the song in psychology terms. I choose this song because I really like it and every other song that has played has been either really depressing or a song that no one has ever heard of before. This song makes me want to get up and dance even though I am awful at dancing. I think it would be really cool to experience a club like the one in the movie Saturday Night Fever because now a days clubs play loud techno music and not cool disco music.…

Scott Cooks artwork “Drug Addiction” is trying to convey a message of hopelessness and despair a drug addict might experience. By examining the Cooks artwork closely, it portrays the filth and the hell that one can get stuck in and cannot escape. Such that one may lack the need to take care of their appearance (health) and live in a clean safe environment, hence the dirty bathroom, because their main priority is the drugs. The malnourish arms I see as the demons that are creeping through, are desperately seeking relief, but the addict is afraid of what might happen if he does not take the pills. The fact that the drugs are at arm’s reach from the drug addict tells me they are easily available, since they are prescribed, shown by the bottle next to him.…

Snowblind,” a song written by Dennis DeYoung and James Young of the American rock band, Styx, was released in 1981 on their Paradise Theater album portraying the dreadfulness of cocaine addiction. The “Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll” era of the sixties to the eighties had glamorized cocaine use. The core members of the band, having performed throughout that period, released this song to serve as a deterrent. With the exception of Tommy Shaw, the group has not spoken out about their own involvement with the stimulant, yet this song gives a very accurate depiction of dependency on it.…

“All Around Me” by Flyleaf is a song sung through the eyes of the protagonist, which is indicated by the use of: I, I’m, my, and me. Though listeners would view “All Around Me” as a song of the grieving of a loved one, a deeper look into the lyrics reveals a tale of a drug addict’s face-off between her former self and the drug that she is addicted to. Imagine being in an emotional game tug-of-war between an addiction and your life. Who would be there for you? We can see this face-off through her: outcries, reaction to seeing her former self, act of transcending to a secret place, repetition of “I’m alive,” exchange with the drug, and surrender.…
