Semi-Barbaric King

In the story, The Lady or the Tiger by Frank R. Stockton, there is a semi-barbaric king that has a very odd political system, and a beautiful daughter who had his whole heart. In this political system one must come to the arena and choose a door. Out one door would come a lady to whom you would immediately marry. Out the other door would come a furious tiger that would more than likely rip you to shreds. They believed that if you were guilty the tiger would come out, and if you were innocent the maiden would come out of the door you choose. This leads me to my next point. The author also states, “This royal maiden was well satisfied with her lover, for he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all this kingdom; and she had loved him with an ardor that had enough barbarism in it to make is strong exceedingly warm and strong.” She was proud of her strong, brave man. She has more passion and love for him than any one person in the kingdom could ever imagine. I honestly believe that if she hadn’t of had such a great love and compassion towards this young man she would have never even shown up at the event, but she couldn’t not go. The love her life would either be killed or married to another lady, which she hated, in the next five minutes of his life. The text states, on page sixteen, “Of course everybody knew the deed with which the accused was charged has been done. He had loved the princess and neither he, she, nor anyone else thought of denying the fact.” The whole town knew the young man had been seeing the maiden. There was no if, ands, or buts about it.
