Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

This summer, my family and I traveled to Berlin, Germany to learn about my Jewish great grandparents’ experience during the Holocaust. After visiting the Topography of Terror, I have become interested in understanding how the Nazis could turn a democracy into a dictatorship. This trip made me question not only government’s actions of the past, but also my government’s actions today. It has made me look at the U.S. 2016 election differently. Most of all, my trip made me want to learn more about Europe in the 20th century.…

One of the best feelings in the world is giving back and educating the community. I’ve spent over 2,000 hours of community service helping schools and non-profits. Through this experience, I’ve become familiar with advocating for service projects and educating my peers on amazing opportunities. Through AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), I was a recruiter. As a recruiter, I had the opportunity to visit several high schools and colleges around the country advocating for the program, and all the good it does for the community.…

My interest in Oberlin developed after finding the institution when I searched for small, liberal arts colleges that provided a rigorous education while providing close student-mentor relationships between students and faculty in both the classroom and research. The emphasis placed on studying abroad by Oberlin echoes my own enthusiasm for international experiences and being immersed in culturally and linguistically new environments. Although I have already travelled internationally, studying abroad would allow me to experience the world as a classroom, become prepared for the global economy, and increase my cultural awareness and sensitivity. I am thoroughly excited by the wide range of countries, such as Ghana, India, and Nicaragua, in…

Growing up, I never expected to have the opportunity to go away to college. I thought I would have no other choice but to attend a community school. Not that there is anything wrong with community college, but my family just did not have the money to send me anywhere else. Although my parents have always supported me in anything I’ve ever done, they never really pushed me to focus on my future. They probably don’t even know what FAFSA is.…

This Spring I will have the wonderful opportunity to travel to the island of Ireland. SHRS Study Abroad in Ireland is a six credit, month long comparative health care program. Students like myself will visit a variety of clinical and research locations in Belfast (United Kingdom) and Dublin (Ireland). By participating in this program I hope to add another layer of knowledge to my understanding of health care. Most of my peers in the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) are pursuing careers in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, or Athletic Training.…

True and significant life is found in Jesus Christ and because of my firm conviction of this it has been my primary objective to point people to Jesus. Being persuaded that Christ wants Christians and especially those who take leadership roles to minister to the needs of others, I have ordered my life to conform to that conviction. Ultimately, Jesus desires that each Christian serves him by serving others; this is accomplished in a variety of ways – feeding those who are hungry, teaching everyone the life saving Gospel, and by leading in a way that reflects the glory of Christ. It has been my immense pleasure to have had the opportunity to preach God’s Word to thousands of people over the past fifteen years. It is my sincere passion to see people embrace Christ Jesus as their Lord and savior and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds through the Word of God.…

Growing up in a Chinese and Vietnamese-dominated area for most of my life and attending schools that follow traditional American culture gives me unique dual perspective of the country I call home. However, being able to immerse myself in a culture different from my own experiences is something I’ve dreamed of doing. While I wish to travel to China and Vietnam to learn more about my own culture, I hope to go to other countries, like Spain or Singapore, to broaden my scope as a global citizen. Studying or interning outside of the United States would be much different from vacationing abroad; rather than having my family dictate what we will be doing and where we will be going, I would have a dual experience of learning in a classroom or at an organization and applying them to the local and global community. With over 200 study abroad programs to choose from as an undergraduate student, UW-Madison is a place I can trust to give me a global education I wish to…

College Admissions: Personal Statement Throughout our many years of schooling, we are taught the importance of attending post-secondary school.
