Seligman's Gratitude Letter

Decent Essays
Psychologist Martin Seligman found that gratitude is a key ingredient of happiness, and the “gratitude visit” was his invention. Many people believe that they will be happy once they have money, they are famous, married to a spouse, or working at a good job. You think of a person who was truly helpful to you and a “gratitude letter” is written by you to that person. Visit this person and reading your letter aloud. In a letter, explain sincerely and with specifics why you are grateful. According to Seligman, the ritual is moving, powerful, and there is a lot of

To whom it may concern, April 9th, 2018 I, Patrick Coleman, am writing this out my own free will and On my Honor, as a scout, I am writing this truthfully and to the best of my knowledge. Last week, during our scout meeting, we played a 20 minute game of manhunt. While we were playing, I witnessed Tristan Stoltz fall. Afterwards, he had accused Steven of pushing him. Now, while seeing Tristan fall, there was no evidence of Steven pushing him.…

Readers can find out how each article uses gratitude by using evidence. The evidence you can get from the story is when you find out that the guy is homeless, hasn't eaten for three days, and hasn't slept for two days. You can then infer that after the man takes him out to eat, that he would chow down his food which he did later on in the story. The homeless guy starts out being very thankful for his food, but then he starts to have terrible manners and unthankful. The evidence you can get from the poem is when it states some of the things you should be Thankful for but in a different…

I am writing this letter as a character reference for John Seward. I have been working with Mr. Seward in a counseling capacity as his therapist since July 2016, and in that time, Mr. Seward has made good progress. Mr. Seward entered into the Washington State Community Protection Program (WAC Title 388 Chapter 388-831) in 2013 and all-subsequent data and reports indicate that Mr. Seward has not posed a risk to the community. In fact, Mr. Seward has completed all of the reductions required to graduate from the Community Protection Program and is currently waiting for DSHS to give their final endorsement necessary for him to graduate. Mr. Seward has not had any major incidents since entering into the Community Protection Program and it comes…

A group of researchers, including Jennifer Aaker and Emily Garbinksy from Stanford University, came to the similar conclusion that people who are happy get their joy from receiving benefits, while those who lead meaningful lives get their joy from giving to others (Smith, E., 2013). At the same time, Roy Baumeister, a social psychologist from Florida State University, also says that living a meaningful life does not necessarily mean living a happy one—at least not all the time. In addition to these credible sources, Smith calls attention to Martin E.P. Seligman, who is described as “one of the leading psychological scientists alive today” (Smith, E., 2013). According to Seligman, those who lead meaningful lives have a desire to serve and or belong to something bigger than oneself, even if it costs them their happiness. To sum it up, by making references to studies and findings from all of these expert researchers and psychologists, Smith has created a very strong and convincing argument that there is more to life than being…

As an American, I believe that my home, the U.S., feels very safe and secure. The great soldiers of our time and before times created this feeling for my family and many others within our beautiful country. They gave us our education for us to have a successful career in our future and gave us all our rights and freedoms because of their bravery and toughness throughout the wars. I will always respect our veterans and will always have the thought in the back of my mind that it was you, the veterans, who made our country so wonderful to live in and always feel safe.…

In, “The New Science of Happiness,” Claudia Wells discusses 3 great ways to become more happy. By getting more pleasure out of life, becoming more engaged in what you’re doing, and finding ways to make your life more meaningful, Wells explains these actions can greatly influence your happiness levels. Savoring each and every sensory drop from any given moment will increase your gratitude towards life's seemingly mundane interactions. Which brings us to the large topic of gratitude which Wells, in conjunction with studies by psychologist Robert Emmons, explains that “Gratitude exercises can do more than life one’s mood… they improve physical health, raise energy levels, and, for patients with neuromuscular disease, relieve pain and fatigue.”…

The instant gratification and admiration that one feels from a gift of gratitude is overwhelming and sometimes hard to turn down. For example, when a firefighter goes above and beyond the duty to serve and protect it’s nice to have recognition of such efforts. In most instances, individuals have been grateful for such recognition and identified the acknowledgment is more than enough and gives of monetary value are not necessary. However, there are instances where the public will not take anything less and sometimes are insulted when their gift is denied or turned down. In that respect, it’s easier for personnel to accept the gift.…

I strive to always be conscious of good things that happen for me and to always make others aware of my thankfulness. This strength is one I find to be beneficial in good and bad situations, as it makes the good situations better and it helps me to see that even in the bad situations I am still blessed. I do my best to make sure my friends and family are always aware of how grateful I am for them and the love they bring into my life. This is a strength I rely on greatly, especially now as I have moved ten hours away from my entire family, it is even more important that they understand how grateful I am for them. I find gratitude is beneficial to my emotional health because being grateful helps me to begin a cycle of feeling positive emotions which makes me feel more peace and positivity in my…
