In the end, religion promotes selfishness. However, the fundamental aspect of it would fool most anyone. Most religions have general rules that the followers abide by or certain beliefs that followers have to believe that promotes a better society and unselfishness within an individual; i.e. Christianity has the underlying principle that one must help others in need with asking nothing in return. Most followers of these religions feel that they abide by the rules set forth because it is what they are supposed to do: they feel that one should not go out of their way to abide by these certain rules, but it should be a strong part of their life.
