Humanity has strict views on the differences between selflessness and selfishness, and the actions and characteristic that differentiates the two. (add what differentiates) However, is it selfish to want to be selfless to better one’s self? Touchy questions such as this are the basis of discovering the true meaning of humanity. The texts, The Bhagavad Gita, The Duties of Brotherhood in Islam, and The Book of the City of Ladies, hold selflessness above selfishness to teach people that true prosperity is found by helping others experience happiness. The metaphor of the city that Lady Reason, Lady Rectitude and Lady Justice create in The Book of the City of Ladies and defining the women who are worth of entrance, act as a guide to reaching “enlightenment” like the other texts. When Lady Reason states, “In order to lay the foundations, you shall draw fresh water from us three as from a clear spring” she wants Christine to cleanse her mind of past notions she had of her gender to be able to help herself and other women (Pizan 12). The evidence or “building materials” the three ladies bring to Christine to change her fixed mindset that man define the qualities of a woman.
