By simply taking a picture of yourself and posting it on any form of social media, you are participating in this new age fad. Camera phones, social media sites, and instant messaging abilities are helping to keep this fad alive and continuing into the next decade as it shows no slowing down anytime soon. This once was a younger generation phenomenon, but it has quickly turned into a craze that all ages are jumping into and trying. “[S]elfies have become the catchall term for digital self-portraits” (Wortham).

People will continue to keep this phenomenon alive as long as they have a need to use it. Today it appears that there will always be somebody who has that need. Showing expressions of oneself is something that will continue through time. Maybe this a good thing for those that have a problem with self-expression with others as they can be more open and honest as long as they don’t have to do it in front, or with someone, in close quarters. One can be popular on the internet without having any actual face to face contact. This may be beneficial for them and give them a sense of belonging to something that they may not have had without the internet and social media. Those who post selfies for anyone to see, and not having to actually see them face to face, gives them some feeling of

When you read John Paul Titlow’s essay ”Me: Instagram Narcissism and the Scourge of the Selfie,” people like to believe that looking through someones account or at their information, might be going too far. Some might not think anything about it because the site allows people to post certain posts, pictures, quotes, and videos. People enjoy to let everyone know how they feel and think. When scrolling through Instagram the users might have several thoughts such as: “#please #stop #hashtagging #every #word #in #the #English #vocabulary”, “I should probably get off Instagram and get out of bed already.…

There are two basic reasons that most people take photos, they are either doing it to show off or to have memories that they can look back and reflect on. Social media has brought about the creation of those who need the images to boast. But those who feel the need to take pictures and videos to brag, are those who get the least out of experiences. They are not appreciating the event for what it is, they just want everyone to know that they are there and are better than you for that. This breed of person is evident at every event, the person who has camera flashes going off like a machine gun in the middle of a war.…

After striving to meet our own standards, the rush of satisfaction fills us with confidence and pride. We want to capture ourselves in our finest moments, and so, we take a selfie. It preserves the best versions of who we strive to be and serves as evidence for what we are capable of attaining. For instance, looking at my selfie from homecoming, I wonder how I drew my eyeliner so precisely and curled my hair in just the right way, and I want to reach that state again. Additionally, as we post the picture on social media, the number of likes and comments also boost our confidence and reassure us that we fulfill others’ standards of beauty.…

Selfies at sacred spaces are incredibly wrong and primitive. In the second article I read was “Selfies at Funerals” I was in utter shock at what I saw and read, these people had no respect for all of those who passed away. Instead of being out there with their families they are in bathrooms pouting and “flexing’’ and some are even smiling, funerals are meant to mourn a loss of a person and not to take completely useless selfies and put them on Instagram or Facebook for likes or sympathy. The second article that I read was” Should Auschwitz Be a Site for selfies?” My reaction to this was that I was in shock also, why would people feel that need to take selfies at the sacred place especially at the Auschwitz.…

Images play a critical role in American society to a point that everyone is using them to express their feelings and unspoken attitudes. However, in the past, people thought their lives were more important than to be constantly taking pictures all the time. People thought that their private images have a great value just for them, and they felt a need to be away from people’s eyes. The question here is, “Are all the images used in a positive way?”…

Social media has many negative effects on teen’s self-esteem. I support the ideas of the researchers who show that social media gives off negative connotations. In this selfie culture we have today many teens has two different lifestyles such as the internet persona and their physical human body.
