Each selfie produces a different meaning and shows a different of me. All three selfies were taken at different places in different attires and they all contribute to developing and reflecting my sense of identity. The first selfie is an image of me playing with Siberian Huskies, the second selfie is of me posing for a photo-shoot and the third selfie is of me in a traditional Indian attire. All three images consist of different poses and the environment; as well as other characteristics (hidden or visible) in each image compose a sense of my identity. The two topics that I have chosen to help analyze and relate my selfies to are gender and class/socioeconomic status. A selfie signifies a sense of human agency and are created, displayed, distributed, tracked and monetized through an assemblage of nonhuman agents. It is taken during the daytime, as natural sunlight is visible in the photo. People tend to be scared of Siberian Huskies in general due to the their animalistic aspect however it is obvious that I'm a dog lover. This is visible in the selfie as I am petting two huskies without any fear, but instead, I have a smile on my face. The location of this image seems to be some sort of tourist attraction as well as a personal facilitation with these huskies. The topic of gender is then brought up, as this could relate to my identity as a female because having a dog or being around dogs in general is a very feminine quality. Dog lovers are also associated as being more adventurous, loving, caring and responsible, which clearly reflects on my identity

The American mentality has shifted from “we” to “#me.” Narcissism has been on the rise for the past twenty years. John Paul Titlow, author of “#Me: Instagram Narcissism and the Scourge of the Selfie,” believes that social media has caused a culture of “digital narcissism.” This narcissism gives Americans the ability to look into others’ lives and see private aspects while also allowing an attractive person to become famous for being attractive (Titlow 122-124). In this essay, Titlow writes, “The third most used hashtag on Instagram is #Me” (122).…

Teenagers are introduced into the glossy magazine culture where images have been taken with expensive equipment and photo-manipulated images to sell a product. Our visual perception and interpretations underpin a process within a conceptual approach forcing us to visually see a representation and reaffirming our sense of identity and the realism of the photographic image laid before us because of this it is easy to see why long term lasting effects ripple though individuals lives, creating a negative self-image. We will look at aspects of Cindy Sherman`s images and explore her reason as to why she completed a series of self-portrait in the way she did and examine the relevance to what she was intending to show. The fact that she decided to not manipulate images could suggest she wanted to portray and uncover the differences between attractive and unattractive.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

It preserves the best versions of who we strive to be and serves as evidence for what we are capable of attaining. For instance, looking at my selfie from homecoming, I wonder how I drew my eyeliner so precisely and curled my hair in just the right way, and I want to reach that state again. Additionally, as we post the picture on social media, the number of likes and comments also boost our confidence and reassure us that we fulfill others’ standards of beauty.…

My “Where I’m From Poem” demonstrates who I am, and my identity. Each line of the poem reveals another aspect of my identity, and opens up to who I am even more. The whole poem is a metaphor of my identity, which is based on my inner and outer self. For example, in line six I state: “I am from the tropical beaches”. This is a metaphor because I was not actually born on the beach, but instead, is something that makes me who I am.…

In her essay, “In Plato’s Cave,” published in 1977, Susan Sontag reflects on photography and looks at the meaning behind taking a photograph. Throughout her essay, Sontag makes important observations based on the broad world of photography. The observations she concludes warns her readers to be careful in how they view or interpret images. It’s not the image that does the interpreting of a picture, but rather the person viewing it. From the time a photo is taken to the time another person is viewing it, a lot can happen.…

My easygoing attitude clearly shines through in this picture from my smiling eyes. Communication theories help create an understanding of different perspectives happening in particular events. I recently went through a critical incident that made me realize the differences in photography norms and how tension can create contradictions in my relationships. During October of last year, my sister-in-law contacted me to take photos for her family, including my oldest brother and their newborn. The photos were special because they only had a few of them together from a tripod, but were not professionally done by another photographer. We arranged on a date and time, aimed for the morning, in the backyard of my parents’ house.…

The paradoxical role of photography in contemporary life is explored by Teju Cole in his essay “Memories of Things Unseen.” When a photograph is the last trace we have of a destroyed work of art, it becomes something more, or so it seems. Photography in its purest form is simply a method of storytelling without the need for words. Many factors go into taking a photo. You don't simply take a photo using just your eyes, but rather with your emotions, experience, and heart.…

The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is the product of a chain reaction that started with a global study that came out in September about women and beauty. The Real Truth About Beauty: A Global Report came to the conclusion “that the definition of beauty had become limiting and unattainable” and that “only 2% of women around the world would describe themselves as beautiful,” (yellow). In response to this global study Dove launched their Campaign for Real Beauty in September 2004 with what is known today as the “tick box” billboards, “which debuted in Canada and spread across the United States and United Kingdom,” (green). The billboards presented real women with appearances outside of the stereotypical norm with “two tick-box options next to them…
