To be yourself means to do what ever your heart wants and don’t care what anybody thinks. In Self Reliance, Emerson says that” Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world.” This quote basically says that if you're human, you should be a nonconformist and your plans should not be disturbed or messed with for the good of yourself and your future. The quote goes on by saying a man will work extremely hard until he is done and has slumped over to rest. My definition of being yourself is to stay true to yourself and always be humble. If you lose sight of what is important, then you really don’t know what your beliefs are anymore. Martin Luther King Jr. exemplifies being true to yourself by fighting for what is right. He knew in his heart that if he died a day before history wasn’t changed, nobody would stand up for what is right. Martin also cared about his faith but did not start caring until he went to a bible class. Martin Luther King had the same views as Emerson and Walden. Martin Luther King, Walden, And Emerson's all thought that if you do not conform to society, you can do anything you want in life if you put in work. Martin Luther King’s decisions to be a nonconformist changed his life. Instead of living a normal life, Martin would go around the country and spread joy to african americans. He would say that to never give up on fighting what you love. The result is as Martin got older, he grew more tired and couldn’t go to anymore rallies and sit out with the others.
