He insists for individuals to start thinking on their own rather than to comply with the ideals of society, because in society those who stand in silence might become overlooked and might never fulfill their true potential. In Self-Reliance Emerson gives us a solution for the fear that clutches the hearts of many brave individuals and that is to “Trust thyself” (270). Granted, Emerson’s mentality can be considered idealistic, but at the same time it is something that sadly in today’s American society can be considered dangerous due to the sensitive topics in the present time. Emerson proudly states in his essay Self-Reliance that “It is easy to see that a greater self-reliance must work a revolution in all the offices and relations of men; in their religion; in their education; in their pursuits; their modes of living; their association; in their property; in their speculative views.” (281). In our American society of today Emerson would contradict many of society’s standards by speaking about delicate topics, such as religion, education and property because even in today’s society religion and education are not allowed to be mixed
