Self-regulating learning is the ability to understand one’s learning process, with the help of metacognition, task analysis, and self-motivation. This ability is not attained so easily, it is a process that involves practice and persistence in order to develop the habit. From the handout “Self-Regulated Learning”, Schraw established a three-stage model on how to become a self-regulated learner and consistently monitor one’s own learning process (Overby 2). The three stages he writes about are the planning stage, monitoring stage, and evaluating stage. I found that I am strongest in the planning phase. I find it easiest to have a structured plan before beginning any task. I set a goal and develop a plan of how to reach it. I make sure I understand the task, determine my priorities, and what resources I might need. Throughout my task I constantly think back to my plan and mentally check off the completed steps. This helps me stay on track and keeps me aware of where I am towards reaching my goal. Next comes the monitoring stage. When I have a well-developed plan, monitoring my progress comes easier. I remind myself of the end goal, and make sure I am keeping on the right track. What I need most improvement on is the evaluating phase. Evaluation is a big step in learning how you learn. It is not as simple as just listening to an instructor as they teach, depending on them to deliver the knowledge you need. We are continuously learning and taking in new information. Being aware of my personal learning style and monitoring my learning has helped me greatly in identifying my strengths and weaknesses, improving my learning strategies, and making the most out of my learning
