I would like to illustrate in the light of an incident on how I could implement the strategies of supervision and feedback while orientating a newly recruited health care assistant in my practice setting. Involving …show more content…
As a part of an immediate informal feedback, I first encouraged her to reflect upon the task carried out, what went well and what did not, and ways to improve on the shortcomings because self-reflection is an important element of productive feedback (Hinchliff, 1999, as cited by Anderson, 2011) and helps preceptor to evaluate whether the student comprehends about his or her area of improvement (Duffy, 2013). She could realize her non-compliance in wearing gloves. I started my feedback on a positive note by appreciating her for completing the task and then communicated my concern based on observing her. I orientated her to the 5 moments of hand hygiene, steps in hand washing, use of alcohol-based hand rubs and appropriate personal protective equipment such as goggles to prevent splashes in order to help attain competence. I also relayed my confidence in her and encouraged her to practice and develop the skill according to professional standards. Preceptors constantly monitor the students for any repetition of unsafe practice and gradually allow autonomy once they prove to have adapted to the standards (Luhanga, Yonge, & Myrick, 2008). The same notion was adopted when I continuously assessed the health care assistant whenever she emptied the urine bags and based on mentorship approach, supported and provided guidance (McLure, n.d) when needed. As a good learner, she could understand and rectify her
