Self-Reflective Essay
College was nothing I expected and the transition from high school to college was tough. During my senior year of high school, I took easier classes unlike everyone else who took harder ones to prepare themselves for college. In my classes, I never had to study or worry about the workload, but in college it was way different. I wasn’t sure how to study for exams, so I struggled at the beginning of the semester. I also came to this school not knowing anybody, which was hard because I am shy and I struggle to put myself out there. The first semester of college taught me to be independent though. I knew I had to learn how to do many of the things others knew because I was very dependent on my family and friends throughout

Through field hockey I gained knowledge about valuable lessons such as, hard work, dedication, and how to be a better team player. I became more confident in myself in my first semester of college. I’ve always struggled with confidence, especially after a bad grade or game, but I no longer think negatively and if I am more confident I will be able to perform better. Coming into college, I was worried about making friends, since I didn’t know anybody that was going to Elizabethtown and I am shy, but making friends was easy. It helped that I didn’t pretend to be anyone else but myself. In college, no one cares what you’re doing with your life, so being myself was easier. This made me value my friendships at home. I need to make more time to visit friends and do fun things with them because they are still important to me. Another thing I learned was I like being alone. Many people see it as a bad thing, but sometimes the quiet is good. While I do like alone time, I learned I need to go out and do more things on the weekend. I usually sat in my room and did nothing on the weekends, which I want to change. Finally, I discovered the hard work I do outside the classroom pays off in the

All it took was three days. Three days for my view on life, the way I live, and how I view others to change. Towards the middle of my sophomore year I received an email from my guidance counselor asking me if I wanted to attend the HOBY seminar during the summer. Only one student from the high school was chosen to go, and I was honored to have been that one. HOBY stands for the Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership Seminar.…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

Writing has changed my perspective on various aspects of my life. Some of the essays that I have written in the past have opened doors to new ideas. These essays have helped me make connections I feel I never would have made without writing. I believe this is because I enter my deepest level of concentration when I write. This heightened level of concentration I reach when writing has allowed me to reflect on important areas in my life such as self-awareness and motivation.…

While reading the article, the only thing I could really think of was that it was pointless and I didn’t agree with anything. The only part that I agreed with was when Korn said, “Employers complain that colleges are not producing graduates who can solve problems and connect the dots on complex issues.” Since this article was about people not being able to think critically, I interpreted it as colleges aren’t giving their students the experience they need to think critically in an emergency situation at work. While I finished the rest of the article, I then realized, why is it the colleges responsibility to help students gain that experience to help think critically?…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

I first became interested in counseling when I was helping a friend with serious drug related problems and family problems seek help and counsel from advisors. Being just sixteen, I didn’t know how to help him efficiently and felt both powerless and helpless at trying to find adequate resources and services to help him deal with his problems. While I did eventually find counseling services and potential help for him, the effects of his psychological problems were so brutal that he committed suicide. This profound experience of losing a close friend to suicide forced me to develop a strong interest into understanding the role, guidance and motivations that leads people to such extremes. At this point, I had already cultivated the desire to…

Writing an essay about my experience as a writer and how I feel when I write. I thought should be a breeze until, I received my grade back. It was not a horrible grade, nor what I was expecting. When reading the teacher’s comment “While you did write your response in several paragraphs, it isn 't fully a reflective essay. To be an essay, it must include an introduction paragraph that ends with a thesis/focus sentence, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.”…

With the first essay that we worked on I did a memoir I really enjoyed working on this paper, In class we were able to get freedom to add pictures to are pictures make it a little bit more creative I certainly was not used to this; I’ve been told my whole schooling experience that you have the intro and the conclusion and three body paragraphs. The memoir I was able to write to what I felt like I needed it to be, add pictures so it could appeal more to the eye when reading and also made it easier.…

My first semester of college has been an intersting learning experience. It has been full of ups and downs. I’ve learned a lot since being in college, mostly how to take charge of my life and get my priorities straight. I learned that being successful in college depends on how you prioritize your work and how serious you take it. At first my priorities weren 't where they were supposed to be, and I realized my grades were going to suffer if I did not change.…
