Having completed my first video session, I felt confident. I thought I used a variety of skills while attending non-verbally throughout. After, analyzing the DVD and critiquing myself, I am apprehensive with much to improve upon. Overall, I was able to attempt confidentiality, encouraging with non-verbal and verbal responses, questioning, paraphrasing, and summarizing. In all areas, I could better my skills and execution of the skills. For example, I need to become more aware of my body, while counselor. I was constantly tapping my food, scratching my arm or head, touching my face, and sniffling. This would become very distracting to some clients. Being aware of my body also may require practicing facial expressions in the mirror, so I learn how to communicate the correct message …show more content…
Asking multiple questions in a row can often cause the client to become defensive and shut off. During the session, I found when I asked multiple questions at once the client gave minimal responses. Next session, I hope to simplify and reduce the amount of questions I ask at one time. According to Dan Smith from California State University, there are four types stages in his theory of counselor competence. When assessing my paraphrases I attempted to align myself with one of the four stages. I felt my responses aligned with the middle two stages, conscious incompetence and unconscious competence. I was about to be aware of my mistakes and begin to formulate responses in a technical matter. Over the next two sessions, I hope to get closer to achieving the highest stage, the artist or unconscious competence (Smith, 2006). Specifically, I need to become briefer and more concise when paraphrasing the client. In addition, I need to work on touching on all key concepts clearly when summarizing. Next session, I may begin with a summary to help remind the client about what we discussed during session

Journal: Self-Assessment As a result of utilizing skills in the mock counseling video such as attending behaviors, encouragers, paraphrase with checkout, and reflecting of feeling, I was able to gain better insight into my ability to apply these skills within the helping relationship. Specifically, I came to realize that it is necessary for me to be more aware of my verbal and nonverbal encouragers such as nodding and saying “Mhmm”. Honestly, I felt as if my nodding became distracting despite the fact that I utilized it to ensure the client knew that they were being heard and that I was interested to hear more of their story. While I do believe that I was successful in conveying interest and warmth, I could have utilized a more diverse range…

As clients come to me, whether it be mandatory, by necessity, or by choice, I will choose my methods based on the needs of each of my clients. As the client and I collaboratively assist and plan for their success I believe they will only learn the skills necessary by doing. For example, a client can express their desire to get a job, but they will not acquire one until they have applied. It will be my responsibility to help develop the skills needed to feel confident in the application…

I witnessed myself several times throughout the activity trying to assimilate new information to what I thought was right or made sense. As a counselor, I will come into contact with people whose views and experiences are drastically different from my own. I will need to maintain self awareness when interacting with clients so that I able to recognize when I am judging what the client is saying rather than using empathy to understand how the client feels in relation to what they are saying, and what in means in context of their life. Awareness is the first step to effectively interacting with clients. I will also need to continue to build upon my knowledge base.…

Module 5 Entry: Reflective Thinking In my opinion the most important part of adaptable leadership is going to be the ability to think reflectively. To learn from your mistakes, and look inward for mistakes that you have made and learn from them, while pushing to new horizons. This is important to me, because this course has made it apparent to me that I am not a one size fits all person, literally and figuratively.…

After attending my first lessons in management and strategy, I looked at all the course slides and article readings to start thinking about self-awareness. So what is self-awareness?I think it is a process that helps you get to know about your strengths and your weakness, your values and belief systems, your preference and your personality, and the most important part that is your ability. Then what are the benefits we can obtain from this process?Rothman(1999)suggests that increased awareness brings increased openness to other ways of thinking and a greater insight into other kinds of life experience. Just like every time I tell my friends,”try to get a job not only you like, but also you are good at”, people need to know their preferences and…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
