Asking multiple questions in a row can often cause the client to become defensive and shut off. During the session, I found when I asked multiple questions at once the client gave minimal responses. Next session, I hope to simplify and reduce the amount of questions I ask at one time. According to Dan Smith from California State University, there are four types stages in his theory of counselor competence. When assessing my paraphrases I attempted to align myself with one of the four stages. I felt my responses aligned with the middle two stages, conscious incompetence and unconscious competence. I was about to be aware of my mistakes and begin to formulate responses in a technical matter. Over the next two sessions, I hope to get closer to achieving the highest stage, the artist or unconscious competence (Smith, 2006). Specifically, I need to become briefer and more concise when paraphrasing the client. In addition, I need to work on touching on all key concepts clearly when summarizing. Next session, I may begin with a summary to help remind the client about what we discussed during session
