One prime example of this type of self-presentation can be seen in the military. Drill Instructors react in a strikingly similar way to when young recruits make mistakes. Yelling, invading personal space, verbal threats, and aggressive posturing are often used as a way to show the recruit who is in charge. Much like the lion pride, these actions reinforce a hierarchal structure the recruits must abide by if they plan to succeed. Aside from the social similarities of personal encounters, there are also similarities in the way different groups interact with one another.…

When I was a Sailor first deployed to Afghanistan I was sent with medical supplies similar to those used during Vietnam. While on a foot patrol we came to a group of locals who had a boy with a open skull fracture, I secured the gaping hole with my basic gear ment for Marines. We escorted him to an Army combat out post hospital where an Army doctor questioned my gear and asked if I'd like an upgrade. He left and came back with a new med bag filled with new updated gear and gave it to me, saying this should help you keep more folks alive. I feel my experience with collaboration in that situation was awsome through inter-service provisions of medical care to those in need.…

On one particular evening after arriving home from work, we heard loud voices yet we proceeded to enter our apartment and once inside, there was a knock on our door and upon opening the door, a child stood and said, “My mother and father are fighting.”…

In Composition II it was both difficult to pick a topic and to continue to only write about that topic. I new that the topic I picked would be the only thing that I would be able to talk about, so I gave the topic a lot of consideration. I took into consideration how much research I would be able to find on it and if it was relevant to today’s issues. I also thought about if there were counter arguments, because I knew that I would have to come up with different arguments other than my main argument to make sure I was not bias. I was considering many different topics, but I finally chose Performing Arts Programs.…

It has only been three weeks and I have never had a class that has personally affected me as much as this one. This week’s reading, “The Social Construction of Unreality: A Case Study of a Family’s Attribution of Competence to a Severely Retarded Child” by Pollner and McDonald-Wilker, really made me question my entire life and the role that my family has had in my education. I am in my second year at UCLA with a full scholarship for tuition and very minimal loans. Granted I have had some ups and downs with my GPA, I have overall been managing my grades. As a student, you can say I have been quite successful.…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…

When I was tasked to write my philosophy, I pondered on what I should discuss. As I thought back on what means the most to me and how I will lead my troops, I had to refer to my personal mission statement that I wrote for myself after I became a parent many years ago: Through the test and trials of life; endure, stay focused, stay encouraged and be reminded that joy comes in the morning. Never forget the morals and values that were instilled in me. Make sure my children possess and maintain those very values. To learn from the past but not live in it.…
