Self-Reflection Essay
Over the Fall semester of 2017, I have expanded my level of reading and writing in Stretch English. Some strategies that have helped me succeed this semester are annotation, revision, summarization, and drafting.
As for reading to learn, articles in the New York Times have helped me a great deal. I learned to read different pieces and understand various authors’ ways of writing. I would print and annotate articles and was able to summarize what I had just read. Annotating also gave me ideas on what I should incorporate in my own pieces of writing, which includes my Op-Ed and CRR1. For my Op-Ed piece I used the same structure as an article I came across on the New York Times. In my Op-Ed I numbered each point followed by a short paragraph just like the article I had found in NYT did. I also read the “Roth on Trump,” and “Weaving Storytelling into Breaking News,” articles. The authors in both stories included the 3 rhetorical appeals ethos, pathos, and logos into their writing. This left me with an idea to use the rhetorical appeals in my Op-Ed or not. In the end I used pathos since it was personal and I wanted the reader to feel towards my topic.
For writing with an increased awareness of the process, in class workshops worked for me. The in class writing workshops helped my rough drafts reach a final draft through revisions made by my peers. I received feedback from my peers and it was my decision to take new advice from a new set of eyes. I also received feedback from my professor which was helpful as well. Revision and feedback from others alerted me from making the same mistakes in the future. In the future, I will continue to have others read my writing because one set of eyes and one perspective is not enough in writing at
