I started my year using ClassDojo, an online point-based behavioral management system. I quickly realized that numbers on a projected screen were not tangible enough for 5 and 6 year olds. The interval between praise and reward was far too long. With the help of my kindergarten colleagues, I implemented a chart system to manage individual student behavior. In the system, every student has a clip, which they move up when they are praised and move down when they are not following rules or instructions. When in actuality, brain research suggests that individuals who speak two languages are typically more intelligent than individuals who have only mastered one. ELLs do not have their English voices yet, and I believe that it is my job as an educator and human being to advocate for this underrepresented group of students and their families. I feel very well equipped to do so. As mentioned above, I stand for an underrepresented group. I know what it is like to not have a voice, and I want to be the voice for the ELLs in Dorchester County.
