Imagine growing up without a voice. That is how I spent my middle and early high school years, silent. Although I was physically and mentally capable of speaking, I kept quiet for fear of judging words and looks from my peers. What set me apart from other students was my sexual orientation. I did not feel confident in who I was until I stepped on my high school’s stage, acting out the struggles of others. Through the characters’ voices, I found my own.

Creative expression shaped me as an individual, and in turn helped to mold my professional philosophy as a teacher. My journey as an educator began in a course titled Theatre for Young Audiences. I started my year using ClassDojo, an online point-based behavioral management system. I quickly realized that numbers on a projected screen were not tangible enough for 5 and 6 year olds. The interval between praise and reward was far too long. With the help of my kindergarten colleagues, I implemented a chart system to manage individual student behavior. In the system, every student has a clip, which they move up when they are praised and move down when they are not following rules or instructions. This system is more palpable and personal than ClassDojo. After its implementation, I saw a great improvement in student …show more content…

ELLs do not have their English voices yet, and I believe that it is my job as an educator and human being to advocate for this underrepresented group of students and their families. I feel very well equipped to do so. As mentioned above, I stand for an underrepresented group. I know what it is like to not have a voice, and I want to be the voice for the ELLs in Dorchester County. I am willing to fight for these children and help them be heard by teachers, members of administration, and members of the

I do not plan on transferring as most of my friends have, but I will to push myself to be proud of my decision I have made to stay at BC. I have gained, experience, knowledge, lost, and understand most things that I have been exposed to in my twenty years of life. One goal I have is pass the GKE (General Knowledge Exam). This year has been a crazy one. I came from a public school, not knowing anyone, so I terrified and didn't know what to expect. I struggled with trusting others, time management and battling multiple tasks at once. Luckily, I had a lot of practice throughout the year. For instance when we had to record a News Show for Mr.Mora's class, I was faced with all of these problems.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

Changing Our School Gold Beach High School has some good to it being in a small town, but because it’s in a small town it also has some issues that could be changed to make a huge difference. If I could change three things about GBHS and how things were run the first thing would be adding more classes for students to take. Doing this would help add classes that are more relevant to students and they could learn what they wanted to. The next thing I would change is how long the school day was and how sports worked. Being in school for almost 8 hours a day just for some students to have to do sports soon after really affects how students can do homework or even interact with their family.…

During a high school math class I attended, a teacher of mine was explaining a fairly difficult subject, all that was on my mind was how I would teach the class instead. After the lecture ended I started thinking more about it and concluded that I do that for nearly all of my classes. I constantly think about how I would respond to questions, how I would grade, and how the class would be structured if I was in the math teacher’s shoes. I have decided to become a secondary math teacher, but I would like to know the job outlook for high school teachers. My first source regarding the job outlook for teachers was a short video.…

My mom also refused to allow me to attend school. I craved learning though, and I taught myself by studying books at the library. My mom was constantly reminding me that I was not smart enough to ever attend college and would remind me of my sister’s failures in education.…
