Self Reflection In Nursing

One of my strengths this semester was administering medication. Every medication that I gave I did the three checks and the six rights of medication administration. One time I grabbed the wrong eye drops from the drawer before checking the MAR but when I started the three checks I noticed right away that I had the wrong medication. This showed me the importance of doing the three checks before every medication administration since it is easy to make a mistake. Another strength of mine this semester was being compassionate and empathetic to my patients. I tried to form a relationship with each of my patients during my shift. I always tried to remember to listen to them and treat them how I would want to be treated if the roles were reveresed. …show more content…
The fist area I need most improvement is deciding what priority nursing interventions I should do first. This takes time to learn what is going to kill my patient first and then that decides what intervention I need to take immediate action on. Going into Rochester next year I need to remember to stop and think before doing any interventions, what is most important for my patient based on the ABCs. Secondly, I need to learn how to do focus assessments when I am doing an intervention. For example, if I am putting on TED stockings on my patient while I am putting them on for them I should do an assessment on their feet at the same time so I do not have to come back to do my assessment on their …show more content…
This year when in clinical the nurse asked if I wanted to do the next IV after watching her do the first one and I said no because I wanted to watch her do another one. Unfortunately, when it was my turn the patient’s veins were very hard to see from the skin so she did this IV insertion. My shift at the clinical ended and I did not have the opportunity to start an IV in a patient. Next year if I am asked if I want to do an intervention and I do not feel one hundred percent comfortable I am going to ask the nurse if I can do it while they are observing me and helping me through it. This way I can learn how to do the intervention on a real patient and I still have another nurse observing me and helping me through it. My second goal for my junior year is to feel more comfortable using the phone to talk with a provider or labs. In sim lab, there were several times where I forgot to read back the information that I was told, so next year I need to practice and make it a routine that before I hang up the phone I have read back any information I have received to help minimize errors. My third goal for next year is to learn as much as possible. I am very privileged to do my clinical at Mayo Clinic hospitals next year. I always heard about the unique cases that you do will not see daily are sent to Mayo Clinic. If I can work with a patient with a unique health issue I want to learn as much. I

Clinical Context & Experience I completed my final two shifts on 11/24 and 12/1 at Sharp. The unit had a pretty large census both nights, so we were fairly busy both nights. During this shift I had to notify the doctor twice and felt the most relevant journal topic was advocacy. The first night I had three patients which included a 84 year old man who sustained a hip and right shoulder/humerous fracture from a fall at home and a history of HTN, CKD, MI with coronary stent placement, and diabetes, an 86 year old woman admitted for rapid A-fib with history of TIA, HTN, CHF, and rheumatoid arthritis, and finally a 35 year old woman who was being discharged following her treatment for polynephritis. During my final shift, I cared for a 71 year…

One of them being that my emotions must not affect my ability to communicate efficiently and effectively. This will allow me to reassure the patient about the complications that are present and keep them calm. Another issue that I will be aiming to correct in the future is being more aware of how patients are presenting earlier on and asking more questions in the beginning of the session. This will allow me to determine if a patient is not feeling well or won't be able to perform at their usual standards. This will allow me to change the program around to better suite the patient’s current state and avoid issues that occur with some diseases when…

From analysis of tutor and preceptor feedback over the past 3 years of clinical practice, I had gained various positive and constructive responses that I often reflect on. I believe my areas of strengths as a student nurse transitioning into an RN is the ability to stay organized, ability to respond to feedback in a constructive manner, and confidence in my nursing skills and assessments. While these are all important aspects of nursing, the requirement to think critically by linking the patients sign and symptoms to their diagnosis is essential, which is my main area of growth. If I continue to work on the aptitude to think critically, my nursing skills and assessment abilities and results would be enhanced. Both my areas of strength and area…

The clinical experience this week was a little better than it was last week. This week I went in with a notion to just treat them like adults and be comfortable with the members. The first thing I did on Tuesday and Wednesday when I got there and the members started arriving was being a greeter. I welcomed them with a good morning and smile. Some of them stopped and gave me a hug and others did not even respond to my greetings.…

An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…

During my 45-hour clinical practicum, I gained new experiences and applied previous learning into practice. The first day was quite overwhelming. Nonetheless, my preceptor made me feel welcomed and eased my anxiety by patiently explaining things. Our day started with patient rounding in the Cardiac Critical Care Unit.
