Self-Loathing Martyr

In each of the three passages, all express a great significance not only involving the characters involved, but the themes of The Power and the Glory also. Although Padre Jose and the whisky priest can seem like absolute opposites in character, they actually do show some similarities conveyed in Passage A, but obviously some differences. For example, they are both clear cases of extremely humble and self-loathing people. “ ‘I am unworthy. Can’t you see. I am a coward.’ ” (51). Both the whisky priest and Jose show deep instances that they are not complacent with their actions regarding their priesthood. This same belief causes the whisky priest to never accept the condition of a martyr, while Padre Jose is affected in such a way that he can …show more content…
For the father, his dialogue implies that although he is nonchalant with teaching his children religion, he actually does care for it. “... but it meant-well, music, lights, a place where you could sit out of this heat.” (53). From this one can concur that the father does feel nostalgic thoughts about the community of the Church especially now that it is gone. Also, Passage B accents the realization from the boy the difference between the perfect martyr and a real one. The whole story of Juan tells of a boy that made no mistakes and always made the right decision until his eventual death. “He sounds so silly.” (53). This is a profound assumption from the boy because he is realizing that no real human can perform such flawless actions. Finally, there is a great deal of significance from Passage C regarding Coral Fellows. Because of the influence from the whisky priest, Coral is now interested and curious about the idea and conception of Christianity. “I’ve been thinking, that’s all.” (54). She is clearly affected by the whisky priest due to what he stands for and represents even though she lives in rather lenient religious household. This is another example of the vital impacts that the whisky priest, the final priest of the area, has on the people he interacts with it. Therefore, many significant ideals and characteristic of characters are displayed in these

In times of sorrow, especially the loss of a loved one, some people turn to religion. In many ways, religion can be helpful to cope with a death, but other times it can be abused; used to submerge in and forget the outside world. So I can very much relate to the grandmother’s parental teaching and the upset the children felt when wanting to do something that seemed normal for the surrounding people. What resonated the most for me was in the opening paragraph of the poem, when the young girl was detailing what her grandmother did inside of the church. What she detailed reminded me a lot of how my own mother is; my mother is almost identical to the children 's grandmother. Every Sunday my mother could be found praying at church with a rosary in her hand. As well as lighting religious candles around the…

The process of discovery can limit or enhance an individual based on discovering something for the first time or rediscovering something that has been lost, forgotten or concealed. An individual's sense of discovery can be unexpected when evoked by curiosity, necessity or wonder, however, it can also be confronting or provocative which in turn allows us to stimulate new ideas leading us to new worlds and values. Such notions are illustrated through "away by Michael Gow and the related text "my father began as a God" by Ian Mundine, where both texts portray that the ramification of particular discoveries can be far-reaching and transformative for the individual and their world. Undergoing the process of discovery creates new and problematic…
