Self-Induced Isolation

The afflictions that had evolved into a staple harrier are finally taking their long overdue leave. Their presence, although corrosive, was entirely less overwhelming than I initially expected, but as the clock ticked away, so did my will. I spiraled downwards- falling towards patterns of habitual brooding and self-induced isolation.

Solitude was in large, a product of the self. The continual turns towards the smoother road were also the turns that took me further from the brothers that I felt ostracized by. I don’t blame them for my feelings of isolation; I did myself no favors. But, I can’t hide the qualms that lie underneath my refusal to fault them. There were times, and still are times, when I wonder if they allow themselves one moment

Think of a time when you have felt isolated, disconnected, or even disengaged from the world or perhaps each other. I would like you to imagine what it would feel like to inhabit a world where this is a reality, where there is very little human interaction and constant darkness? How would you feel? After all, connections with others gives our lives purpose and meaning, right? Well, these are the confronting dystopian worlds represented in Ridley Scott’s compelling and evocative film, Blade Runner, originally released in the 1980’s and Steve Cutts thought provoking short film entitled Happiness, released in 2017 which both successfully establish a relationship between their purpose, context and the audience.…

In Ray Bradbury’s short story The Pedestrian, the portrayal of the main character Leonard Mead and his love for irrelevant, bygone practices, such as writing and going on walks, locked in conflict with the futuristic civilization that he lives in, who are all obsessed with anything that appears on their screens, symbolizes the unsightly truths of the corrupting nature of and flaws of society. Mead lives amongst a population that is solely focused upon the consumption of technology. Unimaginable fascination with nature and all the thoughts one cannot find on the tv screens eventually gets him into trouble with the police. Bradbury uses the police car as the solitary regulator in the city finding “recalcitrants” and taking them away, presumably forever, thus the community can continue to exist with only one mind, instilled with the never-ending need to watch tv. Because the population has been brainwashed absolutely, there is only a need for a single police car, and even then it is not operated by a human as evidenced by the author’s description of the voice that emanates from the car.…

Introduction: One may not realize that a person is living in isolation, especially if they are seen around people. It is quite a wonder that one can be quite alienated from normal life or people while still living around them. More so, it is surprising how a person could just choose to live indoors because of his phobia and be happy enjoying his own company. In the two works of literature, The Pleasure of my Company by Steve Martin and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, this theme has been expressed in different ways. While Martin in his book, The Pleasure of My Company expresses the theme of isolation by developing a protagonist who is confined from the normal social life like other people with his fears, Salinger develops such a character…

Self-imprisonment often takes the form of isolation, and therefore requires some form of action to escape from.
