One day my mother found me in the bathtub with soaking wet books. I had always been a prevalent reader, but I guess my escapade in the bathtub went a little too far. If I had had my way the bathtub might have started looking like a Louisiana swamp. During my middle school years, I started to read maps. After my parents learned of my interest in maps they took me to a maps exhibit in Baltimore. That experience was surreal to me, and it is one that I will not soon forget. I now keep a collection of over 200 maps from across the nation. As I am about to finish my high school career, I still am an avid reader of maps and other related materials. However, my interests in the field have expanded and improved. Now I have a passion for urban planning …show more content…
My family is able to buy healthy food notwithstanding many people around us don't have that luxury An organization called Grow Harrisburg is looking to change this this situation. I will help them accomplish their goals, implementing the GIS skills I learned at the Geospatial STEM Academy. This project will consist of helping Grow Harrisburg and my local farmers market named Augusta Locally Grown to determine how many people they serve using data already collected by the organization to perform a density analysis. The project will also include using the ArcGIS Collector app to pinpoint all the raised bed projects Augusta Locally Grown has done in the area. Surprisingly, this data collection will be very similar to what my team did for Atlanta Beltline and Trees Atlanta at the Academy. To make data collection easier, the neighborhood of Harrisburg will be divided up into 5 sectors (Central, Southside, Northside, Eastside, Westside). The boundaries of the sectors will be marked to minimize the likelihood of different teams plotting the same beds. Teams of 4 to 7 people will go into the sectors to plot the approximate locations of all raised bed gardens using the ArcGIS app. The app will be programmed to include the feature tabs of Age of Garden and Sector. The attributes tab will consist of Plant Health, Presence of Weeds, Soil Health, and Average lb. of Vegetables per month. Preferably, the monthly yield of the vegetables will be determined by asking the owner of the raised bed. In addition, on a different map, an analysis of all of the greenfields and empty lots in the neighborhood will ascertain which are best suited for a community urban farm. All data and maps will be compiled into PowerPoint presentations, which will be shown at an event organized by Grow Harrisburg in mid-2016. Additionally, the data will allow the nonprofit to apply for grants and more

I still remember when I was seven years old and how my grandpa would come visit my grandma once or twice a week. I would be so happy to see him because he would always call me over and sit me down next to him so that we could watch the history channel together. We would sit there for hours and watch documentaries on everything imaginable. One documentary that I will never forget is one that we watched that was talking about how the Romans built the Colosseum and their aqueducts. That was when I first realized that I liked designing and how I liked seeing how buildings were designed and built.…

The Authors point out that a house subcommittee working with the USDA has deemed that over $2.7 billion dollars are wasted every year when it could be put towards food assistance in other ways. The attempt to be trendy has cost so much because the government has tried plans like paying millions of dollars for trucks to come to places they know kids will be at after school hours, or even during the summer, such as playgrounds and parks and offer them free food. In other cases there were attempts to bring the fresh from the farm vegetables and fruits straight to the school and that was also a costly…

There are specters in the United States, and their names are heart disease and farming-ignorance. Spread across the United States is a fast food and MSG epidemic-- as equally important as well is a decline in the knowledge of producing healthy grown food. To rid this problem from all of the U.S. would be a daunting task, nevertheless could be made possible if started locally. One way to help bring about change would be to establish a Vertical Garden-Bio Dome Club at Northwest Florida State College. The formation of a VG-BD Club could begin to boast access to healthy foods, aid in improvement to the local area’s dependence on outside assistance for key resources, and help maintain life sustainment skills.…

The Map That Tried to Mirror the World: An Analysis On "The Map" by Elizabeth Bishop “The Map” by Elizabeth Bishop is a three stanza narrative poem that explores the intricacies, simplicities and representational fallacies of a map. The poem is complex in the sense that it features how the map is simply an analog for reality; a medium unable to truly or completely capture the authenticity of the real world. In contrast to its elaborate theme, the clarity and simplicity of the title is also almost ironic compared to to the actual following poem. This is because The Map seems like it will be straightforward and concrete like its literal sense but the poem turns out to be anything but. The writing style of Bishop is such that it compels the reader into thinking that they are entering into the map itself, and manages to emote the distinct differences between the reality that we live in and the one that is supposedly displayed on a piece of paper; her claims towards accuracy and objectivity.…
