Throughout the short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, the author Charlotte Stetson goes through the struggle of being a women in the late 1800’s. She experiences isolation, insanity, and depression. In order to get through these phases, Stetson creates a self image in order to fulfill the emptiness in her life.
Isolation is the act of one being all alone and occurs many times throughout the story. The protagonist and her husband have recently moved to a more spacious house to care for the wife’s needs. John, the husband is a physician therefore is hardly ever home. “John is away all day, and even some nights when his cases are serious”(Stetson 649).
Since John’s wife is isolated within the house, she becomes uncomfortable with the home.
