Martel uses the animals to create a self identity out of survival by portraying indirect characterization. In the novel Pi states, “Without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today to tell you my story” (Martel 164). This shows how Pi and Richard Parker have grown closer over two hundred twenty seven days at sea. They both seem to have a special bond together because without Richard Parker, Pi would be left alone with despair. Richard Parker is possibly a distraction to Pi, which kept him from thinking too much about his family and his terrible situation. While spending many hours lying on his side Pi states, “I became attached to these oceanic hitchhikers, thought they weighed the raft down a little” (Martel 198). As the animals start to die Pi states, “To lose your mother, well, that is like losing the sun above you” (Martel 127).
