The movie ‘Nerve’ tells its story through the protagonist, Vee Delmonico, a teenage girl (like Josie) who isn’t a risk taker, but just wants to fit in with her friends and with the people at her school. Vee doesn't enjoy living on the sidelines so she allows herself to be pressured into using a popular online game that challenges its players to accept a series of dares. Towards the end of the movie, Vee realises that she doesn’t need to impress people to fit in. The story is based around a teenage boy, Sean Collins, who is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality as a homosexual. Sean’s father in particular doesn’t accept who he is and decides to turn to a prostitute (Katie) to “fix” his son. Sean feels as though he doesn’t fit in with society and its social norms and feels ashamed for something he can’t control. Throughout the film, Katie develops a friendship with Sean rather than anything sexual and helps him to understand his self-identity and worth. At the end of the film, the son accepts his sexuality and even proudly confronts his father about it. Sean is similar to Josie in the sense that they are both teenagers going through issues regarding their family and self-identity.
