For every wound I create there is a scar and for every scar there’s a story and they all say I survived. - Unknown.
Most people don’t take self harm seriously. They think it is just a one time thing. Self harm is the deliberate attempt to harm your own body in an unhealthy way, to cope with pain, frustration, or intense anger. Most people stand by and witness. They see the scars or bandages like they will go away, but without the help of another they most likely will remain. In most situations, cutting starts with young teenagers; without help, it will carry on like a disease. Most people use cutting as a way to say what they feel inside without the words. The practice of cutting has always been done in secrecy. Cutting has been become more relevant in middle school through high school years. Self harm has become a joke. Some people say it is for attention, or if you cut, that means you want to commit suicide. These are not the same thing. “Social media and television has drawn attention to cutting in the eyes of 9-14 year olds say,” Says (Davis). Statisticians show that people believe those who cut are either emo or attention seekers. Self harm and eating disorders are becoming normal; Are those the kind of things we should be wanting in our communities?

Papa Roach’s song Scars talks about is about putting yourself out there even though you’ve been hurt and having someone use you and never take the blame. The speaker is saying that he continuously hurts himself to save the other and he cannot prevent the pain because he is just naturally a compassionate man although the downfall of others drag him down as well. “Scars” carries the theme that at some point sacrifice can be too much and you can’t always save everyone or they can drag you with them. In the lines, “I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut, My weakness is that I care too much, And our scars remind us the past is real,”(Shaddix 13-15) the theme is shown to the listener that this person has suffered many injuries, emotionally speaking, and cares too much about people that only bring him pain and more injury.…

These issues are increasing in severity, whether in children or adults, in ways that are difficult, if not impossible to reverse such as eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide. In the article “Keeping Eating Disorders at Bay”, according to Cheryl L. Rock, professor of medicine at University of California, San Diego, “Eating disorders are prevalent in industrialized societies where food is abundant and beauty linked to slenderness. Approximately 1-5% of the U.S. population has anorexia nervosa, and 2-18% has bulimia nervosa.” The ages of these victims are decreasing because of bullying or victim’s perception of their appearance and because they have not received the amount of support and understanding that they need. It is important for us to realize that as accepting as we are of it and as perfect as we may think they are, the images are what should be considered fake.…

The trauma those who self-harm are expressing can be anything from physical or sexual abuse, loss of a loved one, or even the breakup of a relationship (Trepal, et al., 2007). Self-harm is then sometimes adopted as a way of announcing these traumatic experiences to others. However, alternatively for others it is a popular way to gain attention from their peers. Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, was developed in 1993 by Marsha M. Linehan as a treatment for clients meeting the criteria for borderline personality disorder who are chronically suicidal (Linehan and Chen, 2004). Linehan developed this therapy out of the sentiment that there was an influx in borderline personality disorder diagnoses, and no successful treatment options specific to this diagnosis (Linehan, 1993). Linehan was influenced by behavior therapy and by Eastern mindfulness. The theory assumes that the DBT clinician is at a certain level of acceptance towards their client’s current distress (Linehan and Chen, 2004).…
