Results were built off of what the test subjects had written within their questionnaires. Some of the questions asked participants to rate the frequency of different acts and incidents of abuse they have witnessed before and after 13 years of age. These results support the hypothesis by showing that physical abuse was related to self-harm concerns. The bootstrapping analysis showed significant effects between physical abuse and self-harm (B = .332, p = .02) and between physical abuse and suicide-related concerns (B = -.059, p <.001). Although this study was put together well, there were limitations primarily the methods used; all test subjects were in college and hardly any had a history of self-harm.…

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent problem among the adolescent population. The problem with non-suicidal self-injury is that it is often linked to suicide attempts despite the fact that the purpose of this self-harming is not for the attention for suicide. In this paper, there are three studies that give insight into this phenomenon. In Nock et al. (2006) they conducted their study for the purpose of finding a correlation between NSSI, suicide attempts, and pain experience in clinical adolescents and finding relations between disorders and the behavioral problem.…

While most members of the Tumblr community praised Tumblr staff for finally taking a stand against blogs that promote self harm by banning them, the owners of these blogs lost their support platform and were forced to internalize their emotions. Bulimia, anorexia, and self harm aren't lifestyles, but mental illnesses, and with mental illnesses, support groups are vital to recovery. The banning of their blogs inevitably only exacerbated their sickness and if Tumblr banning the blogs created more harm than good, Tumblr was wrong for banning them in the first place. When I was in junior high, I had a best friend who I had been close to since third grade and we would go to each others houses so frequently that we practically lived together. She had a Tumblr, but she never told me what her URL was because she claimed that you're not supposed to follow people you know in real life on Tumblr…

It is believed that more than three hundred thousand people end up in the hospital every year due to a self inflicted injury or suicide attempt. What is worse is that these attempts not only potentially permanently disfigure or disable a person, but also can have lasting impacts on both their mental state and affects their family members (Baily, 2011). In reference to the CDC’s 2007 data, “The overall suicide rate was 11.5%. On average every 15.2 minutes someone kills themselves, every 1 hour 37 minutes an elderly person commits suicide, and every 2 hours 7 minutes a young person commits suicide” (Baily, 2011). With these figures it is easy to see why suicide is such a major problem in today’s…
