Self Expression Of Freedom In Lord Of The Flies

Everybody at some point in their life feels as though they are not ‘free.’ I have chosen to look into the theme of “The self expression of freedom.” This theme links to us as the viewers in the real world as it shows how there is importance with being able to express need for freedom as it is a main aspect of life today, being able to have your own expression of this is vital to one's life in the present day. I have found this theme evident in the films and or novels: The Truman show, Directed by Peter Weir, Dead poets society, also directed by Peter Weir, Divergent, Written by Veronica Roth and The Lord of the Flies', written by William Golding. These four films/novels show a significant trace of this theme that I have chosen which ties together …show more content…
The boys are trapped on an island because of a plane crash and it is now allowing them to express their freedom, my theme, an example of this is when simon quotes ‘Maybe there is a beast, maybe it's only us.’ This quote is a good example of my theme, the self expression of freedom, because it shows that simon has initiative. He has realized that they are trapped and their inner beast, their true selves, are coming out. Which then leads back to my theme as it shows that each of the boys are allowing themselves to get used to their freedom and surroundings and simon is a good example of this. The island is a good representation of freedom for the boys. This is isolating them from society allowing them to do whatever they want, an example of this is the sabotage of simon. This example shows how the boys are now able to access their most primitive instincts, no boundaries or safeguards which has lead to this as there are no adults around to guide them in the right direction, leading back to my theme of the self expression f freedom. A connecting link towards the novel 'The Lord of the Flies’ Is divergent by Veronica Roth as they do both share the same theme of The self expression of freedom and both share similarities in character qualities. An example of this is the similarities between Piggy and Beatrice. Both Piggy and Beatrice share the same qualities of having the voice of reason, an ordered mind and they both feel as though no one listens to them. An example of this in Divergent is when Beatrice at the near start of the novel starts to join in to the dinner conversation with her mother and father when she is not meant to. Her brother caleb gives her looks and states ‘Beatrice’ which makes her feel as though her opinion was not wanted, this also links to Piggy from 'The Lord
