The story takes place in a community where there is no suffering, hunger, or war. The society revolves around the idea of "sameness," which means every person viewed as equals, with no differences. All type of self-expression is frowned upon in this civilization. In The Giver, no one is able to see in color and all emotions are suppressed, due to injections the government enforces everyone to take. When the main character, Jonas, becomes enlightened he realizes that the people of his community have no freedom to think or feel as individuals.
