Final Exam: Self Evaluation Essay
I personally can say that I have seen an improvement in my writing since my initial evaluation in the middle of the semester. During my first evaluation I was very confused with many of the general concepts the class held and it reflected in my writing. Answering the questions presented in the midterm evaluation and reviewing my first writing assignment Meta commentary pushed me to try to grasp a better understanding of assignments and ask for more helpful feedback that would benefit me in developing writing especially in the concept of methods and organization. Slowly and surely as the rest of the semester progressed forward I saw an improvement in my writing style and content. Perhaps, the most valuable concept …show more content…
In reading Journal 6, I still didn’t grasp the concept of reading against the grain, or showed good attempts in discovering what Pratt was saying. I saw myself summarizing “Arts of the Contact Zone,” and offered no new insight to my audience. The same occurred in Journal 7, I failed to be the “outside” source of the journal. There were attempts of me trying to explain myself rather than put myself in someone else’s shoes and fully contrast their view with my own views—try to change a point of view. However, it started to become good practice for Writing Assignment 4 and forced me to try to understand Pratt more. I needed a push to complicate ideas that I can see more of an improvement with in my larger Writing Assignments than reading …show more content…
Connecting my classes, English and First Year Seminar, together in order to demonstrate a contact zone forced me to make recognize new connections and put forth more risks to try to analyze quotes. Specifically, in “The Contact of Inquiry and Perspective” I surprised myself a few times in establishing new ideas that relate to both Pratt in myself. My favorite selection of this piece is my observation of bilingualism and comparing it to overlapping perspectives; “It becomes a form of bilingualism to take the opinions of others, yourself, and of the reading in order to observe writing in a new context to illustrate framing of a particular author or passage and to make new knowledge that can be demonstrated through class discussion, a writing assignment, or reading journal” (De La Rosa 6). This is an example of making new knowledge while using Pratt as a frame to guide my ideas and share a common standpoint. Throughout the essay I synthesize new concepts and bring two different ideas together. It was in this essay I understood more the meaning of making new knowledge and reading with and against the
