Self-Esteem over Logic and Beliefs
Columbia College, Missouri

Self-Esteem gives a person the right to value themselves. Our self-esteem sometimes overpowers our logic, and can lead us to act in ways that are not always our own. This paper examines how the following theories; Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, Self- Evaluation Maintenance Theory, Self-Affirmation Theory, Rationalization Trap and Self-Discrepancy Theory impact a person's self-esteem decisions. Where people in different cases come to realize that the choices they have made overpower their superior perfect logic, they have to deal with the consequences that come along with the choices they have made.

First, the authors cannot title their paper as “unskilled” for that means useless. If an individual feels they are useless then that leads to the imbalance of the self-esteem which puts into motion the theory of cognitive dissonance. It is in the security of a person’s mental state and well-being to have a high self-worth. If the person was unable to do this, it could lead to depression, anorexia or other health issues related to low self-worth. Second, early on children’s lives, most parents and teachers, promote a healthy self-esteem by supporting achievements or lack of, with great grades and positive reinforcement or rewards. Every child gets an award or trophy these days; from well done, most improved, class clown, etc. This continues later in life while at college, and then at a job. This is backed up by the Mayo Clinic, in which it states, “self-esteem begins to form in early childhood…relationships with those close to you – parents, siblings, peers, teachers and other important contacts – are especially important to your self-esteem” (Mayo Clinic Staff, Self-esteem check: Too Low, too high or just right?, n.d.).
