Self confidence is something not easily gained, but learned as most teens realize.“I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way” (Dead Poets Society). In this movie we see Todd Anderson go from having low self-esteem to being more confident about himself. In Dead Poets Society, Mr.Keating uses different methods than other teachers to get to his students. Todd Anderson breaks out of his shell with the help of Mr.Keating’s teaching methods that tells them to do whatever they want to do. The positive effects of self-esteem come through with Todd Anderson’s development from a self conscious young man to growing more confident with Neil Perry, Mr. Keating’s help, and to demonstrating great self-esteem in one final act.
In fact, Neil Perry had a big part in Todd’s life. Both Todd and Neil like to challenge each other. When Todd found out about Neils death, since Neil couldn’t be what he wanted to be, Todd had a rough time. Todd told Neil, “I’m not like you alright? You say things and people listen. I’m not like that”(Dead Poets Society). At first when Todd found out that Neil had gotten the lead part in the play, he didn’t quite agree with it. Even though Knox did not have an easy start to getting Chris, he kept trying. He believed that her boyfriend wasn’t the best for her and that he could treat her better.
