Given the role of self-efficacy in various aspects of life, the present study aimed to investigate the correlations of family functioning and personality traits with self-efficacy among the university students and the general public. To conduct this two-part study, it was first carried out in a sample of 500 students at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, and then in a larger sample consisting of 1000 subjects from the general public. The results of the present study revealed that the subscales of family functioning and all personality traits were significantly correlated with self-efficacy among the university students (p<0.001). From the viewpoint of Albert Bandura, self-efficacy denotes one’s belief in one’s capabilities to organize, manage and control situations in life with the aim of managing circumstances (11). As for the origins of self-efficacy, Bandura believes that the initial experiences of self-efficacy concentrate in one’s family (11). In previous research, the relationships of self-efficacy to emotional participation with children (12), the system of family functioning (13-16), perceived social support on the part of family (17) and healthy family environment (18) have been explored, and the results have been indicative of confirming the roles that family functioning and healthy family environment play in the formation of self-efficacy beliefs. Family functioning is the joint effort to establish and maintain a balance in the family. A family with an optimum functioning is an open system in which its members are joined together. Its members have, nevertheless, been encouraged to expand their personal identities. The environment in such a family is filled with love and unconditional acceptance of each member of the family.
