Middle Range theory to be analyzed in this paper is Albert Bandura’s Self-efficacy theory. The method used to analyze Barnum’s evaluation recommendations.
Theory analysis is a process of evaluating a nursing theory. The Barnum’s evaluation is comprised of internal criticism and External criticism. The internal criteria are clarity, consistency, adequacy, logical development, and level of theory development. Her criteria for judging theories will use external criticism are reality convergence, utility, significance, discrimination, scope of theory, and complexity (Barnum, 1998).She states that “external criticism evaluates a nursing theory as it relates to the real world of man, of nursing, …show more content…
The four sources of experience (direct experience, vicarious experience, judgments by others, and derivation of knowledge by inference) that can potentially influence self-efficacy and outcome expectations interact with characteristics of the individual and the environment. Since self-efficacy and outcome expectations are influenced by performance of a behavior, it is likely that there is a reciprocal relationship between performance and efficacy …show more content…
The key component of self-efficacy is the major function of thought that enables people or patients to predict the occurrence of events and exercising control over those that affect their daily lives. Self-efficacy beliefs will influence how a person acts, thinks, feels, and motivate themselves. For examples, In patient’s compliance and regimen of medication, sense of self-efficacy can affect on their positive outcomes expectation.
Nursing
The theory of self- efficacy has been used in nursing research, focusing on clinical aspect of care, education, nursing competency and professionalism.
According to Resnick (2010), nursing intervention can be used to alter the interpretation of physiological feedback and help individuals cope with physical sensation, enhance include visualized mastery, which eliminates the emotional reactions to a given situation. Most influential aspect is learning process. e.g. device using for laryngectomy patient, discharge education.
Environment
The environment where the care of the patient is taking place is very important, as well as the patient’s internal factors. If the patient has pain , fatigue, depression or has personal social issues, then the patient might be thinking of other things besides getting better, e.g, Postpartum mother living in shelter, no family support will affect on negative outcome expectation in
