One of the best benefits that we will have from the autonomous vehicle will be that there will be fewer accidents that cause injuries or even deaths. In the article “Ten ways autonomous driving could redefine the automotive world.” the author states “For every person killed in a motor-vehicle accident, 8 are hospitalized, and 100 are treated and released from emergency rooms. The overall annual cost of roadway crashes to the US economy was $212 billion in 2012. Taking that year as an example, advanced ADAS and AVs reducing accidents by up to 90 percent would have potentially saved about $190 billion.” (Bertoncello , M. 2015). This shows that reducing accidents won’t just save lives, but it will also save money. This will tremendously help our economy as a whole. Another added benefit is that the use of autonomous vehicles will allow us to transport goods or people without the driver having to stop for breaks, consequently increasing our efficiency with transportation by a tremendous amount. Along with these benefits we will also have major downfalls to include the loss of jobs and the possibility that humans might one day lose the privilege to drive because autonomous vehicles will be much safer drivers than human drivers. Many vehicle owners already utilize some form of driver assistance on the roadways. The idea of being able to perform work, socialize or rest while being driven to a destination greatly increases the interest in self-driving vehicles. We as humans are surrounded by technological distractions and could greatly benefit from being able to focus on those things while riding in our vehicles, as opposed to focusing on driving and considering the distractions around us. The number of deaths and injuries on the roadways continues to increase each year, if driverless vehicles prove to be as safe as manufactures are advertising, then those numbers will go down. Along with the increased safety of self-driving vehicles comes a lower risk to being on the highways, therefore we would have lower insurance rates and costs (Sanford,
