They need constant updates
My first reason is that these cars are controlled by computers, which use information from maps. These maps, however, will need to be constantly updated if a new road, sign, or law is added or changed. According to Newsela, “They would not obey a new stop sign.” There also must be a driver in the driver’s seat, just in case the software malfunctions. If there still must be a driver in the driver's seat, …show more content…
However, the human “safety driver” panicked and hit the breaks. Nobody was injured, but the self-driving car was hit from behind by another vehicle. They do not know what to avoid
My next reason is that these cars have problems figuring out what is harmful and harmless. For example, if there is a ball of paper, roadkill, or a rock, they will suddenly change course because they think it is dangerous. According to Newsela, “Such sudden shifts make crashes more likely.” And that is true. 1.3 million people die from road and motor crashes. If there is more likely to be a crash with self-driving cars, that number likely will elevate. There must be new laws
Lastly, because these cars are self-driving, new laws will have to be made. Such as the cell-phone law. You may or may not be able to use your cell phone if you are in a self-driving car. If you must jump on the wheel at a moment’s notice, you can’t be distracted by a phone! That brings us to our next law. If there is a malfunction causing death, who is responsible? The passenger, computer engineer, or the car designer? “It would take judges and courts years to figure out.” says
