Self Discovery in Solitude It is true that a picture holds a thousand words but sometimes one thousand words is too many, and it is more meaningful to be able to express your thoughts within a few hundred or less words. In the past week I have been writing a half/full page journal entry each night about what it means to be alone. During this process I realized that my time spent alone was minimal. This is unfortunate because spending time in solitude for self discovery and creative thinking is now hard to come across in a busy day. A lot of original and authentic thinking comes from when a person is left alone. Therefore it is essential to force solitude and breaks from others throughout one’s life. Of course some parts of ourselves can only be found through others, but many truths come from speaking within ourselves. I feel the most alone when I am playing music. I can escape to an isolated place even if I am surrounded by other people. I wrote about how it take a moment to play piano during a busy day, “I was able to shut off my brain from using words, and instead I used my first language; music.” Sometimes the feeling of being alone can come from when we are most creative and in love with whatever we are doing. Practicing and focusing on our passions can give a sense of solitude, “...and when I get really into the music it feels like I am alone--just for a moment--” I wrote this in my journal because I had a day where I was constantly surrounded by other people. It is all about how we human choose to decipher it. The human mind is especially good at twisting things, therefore it can seem as if being alone is an unfortunate event. When in reality alone time is where the most focused and creative thoughts come from. While I was alone journaling, I wrote, “Insignificance is so important” this thought from my solitude means that the more we think about things other than ourselves and our social lives, the more we explore the outer, creative world. There is so much going on around us, thinking about the world as a whole draws away from the pressured thoughts that we get while we are alone.
