High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…
1. Why did you choose UNH? I choose UNH because of the progressive and productive atmosphere. UNH was one the few schools when looking at potential colleges that seemed to know exactly what it was doing, utilize contemporary methods of teaching and campus structure, and actively looked to aid in the success of its students wherever possible. 2.…
Transiting from high school to college is a frightening process for most people. I can agree. As the days of summer were coming to an end, my level of fear was just starting and increasing rapidly. As soon as I started, the jumpstart program didn’t seem like such a bad thing. I realized it was not as frightening as I thought.…

It seemed that I was on a one-way track for going to a less than prestigious institute for college. However, after four years of high school I’m able to graciously accept admission to NC State university, despite what seemed like a bleak start. After just a short amount of time in high school, I knew something had to change. I took responsibility…
Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…
As summer started to end I was asked frequently: “Are you ready for college?” During my break I could not get over the fact that I have just graduated high school and now I am off to Cal State San Marcos. Summer seemed like a flash and college was creeping behind my shoulders. During the last miserable two weeks all I could imagine was that my hope and dreams were going to be trampled by my fears. When I applied to San Marcos I was full of optimism, not knowing that college would be harder than expected.…
This piece by Jean-Philippe Rameau can not get any easier! If you thought the last piece was easy, you need to look at this piece. It has an overall simple rhythm that anyone can turn into a musically amazing song. As any other easy piece of music, it still takes some thought and practice to master this arrangement.…

The author of the book My Freshman Year enrolled herself as a student at a college university for the purpose of educating herself about life at college. She discovered that there was more to being a college student than what it seemed. Her experiences after a full year as a college student changed her thoughts and behavior towards other students. After a view changing insight to college life, she wrote a book to inform students, parents, and teachers that it is important to open their minds to reach a full understanding as to why people may act the way they do.…
This situation has become all too popular in the high school system in today’s time. While some say that high school is the best days one one’s life, others say that college is substantially improved. What makes high school so difficult for some students? Why is college such a breath of fresh air? College and high school are both critical forms of education, but when comparing workload, social life, and freedom, college is a more favorable student experience.…
The college process is a rite of passage that marks a high school student’s first step into the rest of his or her life. Like any other transition in life it can sometimes feel daunting or overwhelming but I encourage students to focus on the exciting possibilities and choices that lay before them and work through the process in an organized and systematic way that helps them to feel in control of their future. While some of the logistical elements of applying to college begin in 11th or 12th grades I believe that the process itself starts much earlier as students determine who they are as learners and school citizens through academic, extracurricular and personal exploration. We have regularly scheduled classes and meetings with students in the 11th and 12th grade but our office has an open door policy and all Portledge students and families are welcome to visit, ask questions, or schedule a meeting at any time.…
Going to college had been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember. Coming in I expected many things from longs lectures, ridiculous amounts of homework, excessive essays and huge classes, but to my surprise the whole atmosphere is very similar to high school. As a result, the transition has been very smooth so far. How have I been able to make these adjustments you say? Well let’s find out!…
College vs. High School High school and college may appear to be closely related, but in reality they are two distinct worlds. It is crucial to recognize that the two, however slightly similar, mostly contrast in order to successfully complete the transition between the two. In transitioning from high school to college, a student would need to know what to expect, specifically how some behaviors that would have been considered taboo in the former are often acceptable in the latter. Colleges tend to offer a more substantial amount of freedom. High school on the other hand tends to focus on discipline and structural matters.…
