These needs increase and promote happiness and enjoyment in actions and activities. This in turn gives of feeling of control and power in an individual’s behaviors (Deci & Ryan, 2000). People feel that they have autonomous motivation when they have the freedom to choose and pursue what they want in terms of activities, and when they master their chosen activity and there is a feeling of being connected and supported by their surroundings and other people they view as important to them (Gagné, 2003). When self-initiated expatriates feel they are free to go after their personal goals when it comes to work experiences and global mobility, they feel a higher sense of freedom on a psychological level. This psychological freedom motivates self-initiated expatriates to act autonomously and be in powered to act according to their wishes. (Luyckx et al., 2009). Self-initiated expatriates experience a higher level of intrinsic motivation to be proactive in their decision for gaining global work experience when they feel they are competent to do so (Luyckx et al., 2009).
