Self-Determination Movement That Dictates The Role Of Staff In Position

Currently in my professional career there is a huge self-determination movement that dictates the role of staff in my position is to empower individuals with a developmental disability to make their own choices about their services. In my profession we view self-determination as a unique service delivery method which means that a person makes decisions, plans for the future, and determines how funds are spent for supports, and takes responsibility for the decisions. On the surface, our philosophy of self-determination is on par with the concept of self-determination defined in our readings which according to Hartman (1997), “true self-determination requires access to resources, access to opportunity and access to power” (p. 216).
