However, through seeking thorough new clients, Rudy Baylor meet Claire Dane’s character, Kelly Riker, a battered wife who has been beaten up in several occasions by her husband. As shown in the movie, Claire’s husband attacks Rudy due to jealousy with a weapon before smashing him around the house. By the actions carried out, threats and force were used against Rudy so he could stay away from Claire. It’s also shown that Claire tried to use other ways to respond differently so her husband could stop. Additionally, Rudy is seen trying to reason with him once he came into the apartment before the attack. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work and Rudy and her husband keep fighting. There wasn’t any evidence of the previous history regarding Rudy and Claire’s husband. However, Claire and her husband had an aggressive history between them such as the previous times she’s been to the hospital with bruises but blamed them in other situations due to fear. Following these scenes, her husband is shown to attack her in the medical room in front of everyone which causes Rudy to introduce himself afterward which is when they met. In paragraph [5] under Facts, a friend of the deceased, Robert Ezako admitted “ to seeing or hearing the deceased beat up the appellant on several occasions and, during the preliminary inquiry, described her screaming during one such incident like "a pig being butchered.” It’s also mentioned that she showed up to the hospital several times with bruises and blamed it into walking into a pool or falling from a horse like Claire did. All these types of actions are what caused his girlfriend to shoot him because she was frightened for her life. Prior to the shooting, there was a disagreement between Rust and his girlfriend, causing the argument to go further. According to the statements given out by Rust’s girlfriend, this time she felt like he was going to kill her which is why she decided to take action.
