Self-Culture and Family Origin I was born in Merriam, KS. I lived there until it was time for me to go to preschool. Then we moved to Gardner, KS. My mom was born in Wichita, KS and grew up in Kansas, mostly in Olathe, Kansas. My dad was born in Des Moines, Iowa and moved around a lot in his childhood due to his father’s job as an oil driller. My grandpa on my mom’s side was born in Alma, Kansas. My grandma on my mom’s side was born in Parsons, Kansas. My grandpa on my dad’s side was born in Flat Rock, Alabama. My grandma on my dad’s side was born in Georgiana, Alabama. I would say that I have a white, Midwest, law enforcement, upper middle-class culture. This makes you more empathetic to those who are struggling to get what they need and are working hard, but falling short. The value of education in my self-culture comes from being in an upper middleclass family. Both of my parents attended college. My mother has a bachelor’s degree, and my father has his masters. My parents have always emphasized the importance of education and how the more you know, and the higher education you have, the better off you will be financially in the future. My parents want my sisters and I to be as well off, or better off than my family is now, and in order to do that, we must all get our college degrees, and we must all work hard to become highly qualified in our prospective fields. The final value that is extremely important to how I view myself and how I conduct my actions is respect. My high value for respect has come from being in a law enforcement family. My mother was a police officer before she had children, and my father is now the chief of police in Merriam, Kansas, where I was born. When you come from a law enforcement family, you learn to value those who risk their lives to keep you safe. You
