Self-Contained Room Observation

I conducted most of my observations in Mrs. Christy’s room. Mrs. Christy’s room is a self-contained room. Her students, however, do not demonstrate severe symptoms that you would expect in a self-contained room. Mrs. Christy’s classroom is a combination of grades 4th-5th. She has the students all day except for when they go to specials or recess. Another time she is not with is when a speech therapist or a resource teacher comes to get one or more of her students for a short time. The students only go to these outside classes for a class period then they return to Mrs. Christy’s room for further instruction in her room. The beginning of Mrs. Christy’s day with her students starts when the students get off the bus. The students that ride the bus then go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast. After breakfast, the students go to the classroom where the students that were dropped off join them. The students begin class by …show more content…

I learned I need to have at least one time set aside during the day for my students to calm down and refocus on their academics. Secondly, I learned that students might need benefit from lamp lighting instead of the bright over head lights; therefore, it would be good to have numerous lamps spread out around the room. Lamp lighting is also very good during down time. Thirdly, I learned that I need to repeat key facts and information to help my students retain information. Also, it may be necessary to repeat instruction because the students might become distracted or have trouble remembering or catching all the steps to the instruction. Lastly, Mrs. Christy used a calendar to easily keep in touch with parents by writing notes to the parents and keeping them up to date on upcoming events, and their child’s progress throughout the

Introduction Functional Communication Training (FCT) “develops alternative behaviors that are sensitive to the EOs that maintain the problem behavior” (Cooper et al., p.497); EOs are establishing operations and FCT does not seek to change EOs. FCT uses differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) because FCT interventions help the participant to create an alternative form of communication as an antecedent to the previous problem behavior. The DRA of communication provides the reinforcer that has maintained the problem behavior (screaming, falling to the floor), which provides extinction of the problem behavior and a replacement behavior that contains the same reinforcement. “FCT can be viewed as an application of mand training”…

With Rikki Tikki being a short story, I was at the end of the final section when Mrs. Carroll returned. Before I left that day, she told me that she liked it when I come on a different day from my partner. She feels that the students get more distracted if there is more than one Purdue student in the classroom.…

Case One provides the situation of a ten-year old boy exhibiting inattentive behavior within the classroom and receiving low grades. It is unknown if this behavior is shown only within the classroom or within other environments as well. The parents of the boy stress his intelligence, and that there is no history of head trauma or severe mental disorders present within their son. To gain background knowledge on the child’s daily life and environment, I would have a consultation with the parents, child, and teacher. I would use this time to learn about the child’s diet, sleep schedule, amount of exercise, culture, peers, and home life.…

The classroom was set up into different 4 person groups, in which the students were able to work together and collaborate.
