SELF-CONCEPT AND PERCEPTIONS ESSAY
The definition of self-concept is the knowledge about oneself, such as beliefs, personality traits, physical characteristics, abilities, values and goals. In other words, as Gillian Fournier puts it ”it’s the manner in which one perceives oneself. Communication is hugely affected by self-concept, and the people who surround us. For an example, a positive self-concept means a feeling of acceptance and well-being about ourselves. If a person feels good about themselves they are likely to communicate with more confidence which in turn will make people respond back to them more positively. A negative self-concept, on the other hand, might mean a feeling of inadequate and inferiority about our own self, if you approach someone feeling unworthy then you will communicate to others that way, it will result in a negative response from people. This is amazing because it would further her career, and I know how long she has been wanting to get back into school. Well her husband somehow manipulated her decision about going, he did not feel she should go because they have two young children at home, and he wouldn’t be able to do anymore side jobs because he would have to take care of them more. To my surprise my sister went along with this, which changed my perception towards her, before I thought of her as a strong woman whom is capable of making her own decisions, especially ones that would better the life of her family. This has affected my communication with her negatively. When I found out that she decided not to go and the reasoning behind her decision I told her that she was weak for not standing up for herself and doing something she has been very passionate about.
